PORTLAND, Ore. - A long-lost briefcase full of notes and lyrics that were intended for the 1981 U2 album "October" has been returned, 23 years after it was stolen at a Portland concert.

U2 frontman Bono made the announcement Wednesday during an appearance before the World Affairs Council of Oregon, saying the returned notes were "an act of grace."

Bono had to rewrite the "October" lyrics in the studio, and band members called it their worst recording experience. Though the record was generally well-received, it didn't earn the praise of the band's debut album, "Boy," or third album, "War."

The briefcase was returned by Cindy Harris, 44, who said she found it in the attic of a rental home in Tacoma, Wash., in 1981. She said she did not know the notes had been stolen until many years later, and then she had no idea how to reach the band.

Her friend Danielle Rheaume spent much of the past year contacting U2's management.

According to "Into the Heart," a book of stories about U2 songs, the briefcase was stolen by some women who joined the band backstage at a now-defunct Portland nightclub.

The band returned to Portland a few years after the theft and Bono asked the audience if anyone knew about the briefcase. He repeated the question when the band played at the Rose Garden arena in 2001.

U2 Education

I have a question for all of you. I have a friend who's never really paid much attention to U2 and I would like to introduce him to their music. We have a long car trip tomorrow and I thought that would be the time to do it. So this is the list of stuff I thought I could try:

New Years's Day, Surrender, MLK, Bad, Bullet the Blue Sky, With or Without You, One, Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, So Cruel, Mysterious Ways, Until the End of the World, Acrobat, Stay (Faraway, Co Close), Lemon, The Playboy Mansion, If You Wear That Velvet Dress, Do You Feel Loved, Please, If God Would Send His Angels, Kite, Walk On, Electrial Storm

My question is....are there others that anyone would suggest? I tried to pick ones that he most likely hasn't heard.

(PS these are the albums I have: War, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, POP, All That You Can't Leave Behind)

Fake Edge on Interference

I heard some whispers that those posts on Interference allegedly written by the Edge had been officially outed as fakes - does anyone know more about this?

I'd be interested to hear the whole story - who it was, why it happened, why Interference let it happen... or if the whispers were just whispers. 'Cos Interference sure doesn't look like it's just been lied to, going by the posts.

Sorry if this is old news, and I'm just slow :P

P.S. corianderstem, I so want to be you, and not just 'cos you met Bono - I'm jealous of the fact you can write awesome suspense stories, too :P
