SUMMERSTEF

Song of the Day

Sunday's Song of the Day is

Elvis Presley and America from The Unforgettable Fire.

The Unforgettable Fire is one of my most favorite U2 albums. It didn't used to be, though. I think it contains a lot of hidden gems, like this song for instance. I think a lot of songs (i.e. Bad, Pride, and A Sort of Homecoming) overshadowed some of the smaller, but equally powerful tunes. I figured out my love for this song one sleepless, and extremely stuffy/hot summer night.

Some have accused the song of being 'scattered' or 'seemingly unfinished', but I find this to be one of my favorites. When I play the "What songs would you have trouble imagining being nonexistent" game with myself, this is one of those songs.

The interesting part, to me at least, is the fact that Bono sounds a little distant...sometimes, even at a reasonable volume, I find it hard to hear Bono's vocals. You have to really concentrate, but once you do, you immediately fall in love with his vocals on this track.

Admittedly, the lyrics seem a bit scattered, but I think this is one of those rare songs where it seems okay to have scattered lyrics, but well-put-together accompanying music and vocal sound. I'm usually a lyrics fan, but this song doesn't bother me like others have. I can't put my finger on why I like this song, it seems to not have a lot of things going for it, but I do look forward to it on the album. There are songs that I dislike for the same reasons that I like this song...

What do you think? Let's discuss...

meeting U2

My son (who's 10) & I are going to the MSG concert on October 8th. He really wants to meet The Edge & get him (or the whole band) to sign his Joshua Tree album. I've told him not to get his hopes up but that we'd try. When is a good time to try to meet the band? Before or after the show? Does anyone have any pointers on meeting them?

How about a little intermission sing-a-long, a slight rewrite in honor of the band's 29th Anniversary...

It was twenty nine years today,
Larry Mullen called a band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years,
Larry Mullen's Lonely Hearts Club Band...
We're Larry Mullen's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
We hope you will enjoy the show,
Larry Mullen's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
Sit back and let the evening go.
Larry Mullen's lonely, Larry Mullen's lonely,
Larry Mullen's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
It's wonderful to be here,
It's certainly a thrill.
You're such a lovely audience,
We'd like to take you home with us,
We'd love to take you home.
I don't really want to stop the show,
But I thought that you might like to know,
That the singer's going to sing a song,
And he wants you all to sing along.
So let me introduce to you
The one and only Bono here...
And Larry Mullen's Lonely Hearts Club Band. "

Track-by-track comparisons: #1

Just for fun...

OK, this is gonna be the first in a series of polls (probably one per day) comparing tracks across the 11 studio albums. Today you have to decide which U2 album has the best track #1.

Try and pick the one you think is the best *song* in its own right, rather than considering how well it opens that particular album.
