irish_lemon:
I'm currently feelin: frustrated frustrated
I'm currently hearin: U2: Sunday Bloody Sunday

hey fellow U2 lovers; i have a question for anyone here that plays guitar...i'm quite confused, and honestly frustrated as how to play the opening guitar part for "sunday bloody sunday". here's what i have:

E-------2-------2-------0-------0-------
A-----3---3---3---2---3---3---3---3-----
D---4-------2-------0-------0------0----
G---------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------

it sounds okay and everything without any accompaniment of other instruments, but when i try to play to the cd or the live version from boston, it's way too high. so if anyone has the tabs that matches the cd version, please lemme know!

ah, welcome to the world of the edge :-P
in the early days when edge first got a guitar tech, as the story goes, he handed him the guitar back over and over one night saying it wasnt tuned correctly. the poor tech didnt realise that was cos edge likes his guitars tuned down a 1/2 step.
if youre new at the guitar, what that means is, every string is one half note lower than normal. your E would be an Eflat, your A an Aflat, and so on.
most of the songs on most of the albums are tuned down, but there is always an exception. all that you cant leave behind and joshua tree are mostly in regular tuning.
almost everything you will hear that is live tho is tuned down. some songs now (like pride and on the elevation tour sunday bloody sunday) are actually a whole step down, where you E strings would be Ds.
you are playing sbs exactly the way he is fingering it tho, so keep it up. :-)

hope this helps!

thank you so much! hehe, i was wondering why it sounded so much higher; it never even occurred to me to tune it down. you're right, the joshua tree and atyclb are in tune. i can play streets, with or without you, kite, wild honey, and others easily. this really helped me a bunch! lol thank you so much!

Somebody beat me to it, but yeah, you have to tune down a whole step. Actually, given that must U2 songs are already tuned down half a step, you have to go a step and a half down from regular tuning. On live performances from the 80's (such as Rattle and Hum) SBS is played in "regular" U2 tuning. Pisses me off because if I'm playing along with an Elevation show, I have to totally change my guitar's tuning for the one song, and it's hard to skip it becuase it's a really fun song!

One other note...I always play it with my finger on the 3rd fret of the b-string through the entire riff.
