Song Of The Day

Following on from last Sunday's festive SOTD, here's another, even better one:

Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

This is one of my very favourite Christmas songs, partly because I'm a hopelessly biased U2 fan, but also because it's just a wonderful feelgood track that you can't help belting out along with Bono!  More YouTube goodness lurks beneath the LJ-cut. :)

This song was written by Phil Spector and originally recorded by Darlene Love in the '60s. U2's version, recorded at a soundcheck in Glasgow on 30th July 1987, was their contribution to the charity album A Very Special Christmas in support of the Special Olympics. The album was produced by Jimmy Iovine, who also produced Under A Blood Red Sky and Rattle & Hum. A nice bit of trivia is that Darlene Love provided backing vocals on their cover!

U2 performed this song at the very last show on the Joshua Tree Tour, in Tempe, Arizona. This promo video was filmed the month before, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana:

I loooooove this song so much!  It's the perfect way to kickstart Christmas for me. The first time I ever heard it was actually on the radio in 1999, and I just *knew* it was Bono as soon as I heard that opening "It's Christmas...", even though he says it in a really low voice that doesn't sound much like him!  I fell totally in love with the song on that very first listen, it was so much more brilliant than I'd ever imagined it would be.

Everything about this track is perfect, from Bono's enthusiastic "YEAH!" to the gorgeous backing vocals to the Christmassy sleigh bells. Bono's whole performance is just fabulous, I have so many favourite bits - the irresistible singalong of "I remember when you were here / And all the fun we had last year!", the cuteness of him singing "Pretty lights on the tree" (ooo! sparkly!), and most of all the huge "Baaaaaby please come home, ohhh ohhhh!" lines that compel you to join in at the top of your lungs. :D  The great thing about the song is how utterly joyful they make it sound, even though the lyrics are really depressing - the best part has to be Bono singing "If there was a way, I'd hold back these tears" while openly laughing. *g*

And Bono is so adorable in the video, too! Once again he can't resist giving us a little wink, and then he's off being his usual camera-whore self and trying to distract his bandmates (I love the way he grins mischievously when Edge rolls his eyes at him!). He gets a better reaction from Adam, who stays completely focused and then winks at him. :D

I hope you guys have as much fun with this song as I always do!

LYRICS

It's Christmas
Baby, please come home

Yeah!

(Christmas...) / The snow's comin' down
(Christmas...) / I'm watchin' it fall
(Christmas...) / Lots of people around
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home

(Christmas...) / The church bells in town
(Christmas...) / They're ringin' a song
(Christmas...) / What a happy sound
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home

They're singin' deck the halls
But it's not like Christmas at all
I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

(Christmas...) / Pretty lights on the tree
(Christmas...) / I'm watchin' 'em shine
(Christmas...) / You should be here with me
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home

Ohhh oh oh
Baby please come home
Baby please come home

They're singin' deck the halls
But it's not like Christmas at all
I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

(Christmas...) / If there was a way
(Christmas...) / I'd hold back these tears
(Christmas...) / But it's Christmas Day
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home

(Christmas...)
Ohhh oh oh / (Christmas...)
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home
Ohhh oh / (Christmas...)

(Christmas...) / Baby please come home
(Christmas...) / Baby please come home...

Here are the video (.ram, 3.76 MB) and the MP3 for your enjoyment. But I totally recommend buying the CD, as there are lots of other great tracks on it (Madonna, Eurythmics, Pretenders to name but a few), and of course it's for a good cause!

Hope you're all having a good Christmas holiday, and don't forget to have your say in the u2 awards when you get a spare minute!
