2007 Predictions

7. Bono

Will continue to wear those phony sunglasses and try to save the world, sliding into irrelevance all the while. This is a band that needs experimental music released sequentially to regain its cred. But they're too busy satiating their fortysomething audience, giving them exactly what they want, to matter. It would be like the Beatles releasing "Beatles For Sale" over and over and over again. How about another "Achtung Baby", babies?

preach on brother!

I have been reading The Lefsetz Letter for a few years now. Jim Lefsetz is an out-of-touch hack, way past his prime. It's pathetic. U2's music has always been relavant, and will continue to be for a long time, regardless of what "insiders" think. This is a band that has continued to buck the trends and continually released a top form product, while critics and haters have continued to say that they are past their prime and has-beens. These are people that will always be against U2 for some reason or another. U2 is on a path all their own.

ironic that the guy says that about "giving them exactly what they want" when for so long the band and PM have bragged about "making each album with a new audience in mind"....

How about I prefer letting the band take me where they need and want to go as opposed to wishing them to be guided by some imaginary, shallow coolness factor determined by the desperately uncool, hmmm?

"Phony sunglasses?" What does that even mean? They're not real, they're just painted on? : P

Not really. That's the audience that seems to want them to return to The Joshua Tree, and keep re-releasing it every few years. : P

Although I don't agree with everything he said, (Achtung Baby is my favorite album, but I don't want another one recycled.) I do agree with a lot of it. This is precisely the conversation my husband and I had last night... The band continues to make relevant albums that people are interested in, but I think this would be a wonderful time for them to stretch themselves. We know they can think outside the box (Passengers), why not experiment in electronica more? If they made something inspired by Radiohead for example, then they could really move in a new direction that would be a positive change. During the Joshua Tree era, they were inspired by Blues and Americana, and look how amazing the album turned out! There is climate right now that is very interesting, and I would love to see what a U2 album would sound like if they found inspiration in the digital: writers (like William Gibson's book 'The Idoru'), the multitude of modern painters(like Chiho Aoshima), or any of the musicians out there that the band admires (like the Arcade Fire). Its definitely not the time to look back and be nostalgic about the Beatles, it is the time to look forward at what's ahead.
As for the sunglasses....Bono always evolved with each album, but over the last several years/tours, he has settled into a 'style'. The short haircut is a step in the right direction though!

This guy doesn't understand the idea behind the U2 Trifecta (new style every three albums). Perhaps the new album will brighten his mood.

The funny thing is, though, even though the style changes, the message stays the same.
