I'm currently feelin: hungry hungry
I'm currently hearin: Kids - Kylie Minogue and Bono

Okay, so yeah, totally out-of-the-blue SOTD from me, but I can't get this damn song out of my head, and I like it, and it wants to be SOTD'd, so I'm doing it =D

"Kids" by Kylie Minogue and Bono

This was performed in November when Bono joined Kylie onstage at one of her Sydney concerts. I must admit, I hadn't even heard of this song until I heard they'd sung it together. The song was originally done in 2000 by Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams, and though I know a few songs by both respective artists, neither are as huge here in the states as they are abroad, plus I live under a rock.
So, I could've gone and investigated this song as soon as I heard about it (as in, listening to the original), but I didn't. And then in the following days, I viewed some horrible quality (although very intriguing!) clips of the performance on YouTube, which gave me a bit of a feel for the song (more on those clips later), but overall, my plan was to wait for an mp3 of the full performance, and luckily, Kylie released that show as an official recording quite quickly (unlike a certain band we all love for some reason, who wait like 10 years to release something XD).
So I finally listened to it, and I think my immediate reaction was that 1. Bono sounded goooood, and 2. I had no clue what the song was supposed to be about. And apparently the few commentors at songmeanings.net had no idea either (amusingly, one of them said something like "I have no idea what the song is about, I came here to find out!"), but the song appears to be the dialogue between a singer and the woman he's pursuing. Simple enough, really. Though... as I'm writing this, it's just occurred to me what song this reminds me of. It reminds me of Drive My Car by The Beatles, sort of the way the singer thinks he's hot stuff and can get the girl, because he thinks he's 'entitled' to her, but she's got her own ideals about what she wants.
Okay, so before I really get into the nitty gritty of the song, I'd like to point out what Willie Williams had to say about this particular performance in his tour diary:

"Kylie is in town and I know quite a few of her tour staff. I was planning to go to the show on Tuesday, but during the course of the afternoon, Bono threw into conversation that he was going to sing with Kylie that night. Howls of delight went up all round and suddenly tonight was the only night for a man to go to a Kylie Minogue concert.

A group of us (including the whole of U2) headed down to the Entertainment Centre, which is a very nostalgic building for U2 as we did five shows there on our very first trip to Australia in 1993, then nine more on the LoveTown tour. The show is in two parts and we were given the nod that the song with Bono was to close the first half. It was a really fun pop show, but given that the audience was composed largely of twelve year old girls and gay men (not necessarily together) I wasn’t sure what sort of a reception Bono would get, as neither of these groups could be said to form part of U2’s core constituency. However, when Kylie brought Bono onstage, it absolutely brought the house down. I felt vaguely paternal for a moment or two. He sang really well, despite confessing not to know the song -Kids - that afternoon. It was really great fun to watch.
"

First I'd like to point out how cute it is that Bono sort of randomly announced that he would be singing with Kylie, the afternoon of the show. "Oh by the way, I'll be performing for a NEW crowd tonight... in case any of you care."
Second I'd like to point out that he's really right. Kylie and U2 don't really draw the same crowds, but it was nice that her crowd appreciated him <3

So let's get into the song. It bothers me that I don't have clear visuals of what's going on. For one thing, when listening to a live U2 track, being a fan, you typically know what's going on. You know what the stage looks like, and who's standing where, and generally what's going on, even if you can't see what's going on.
But I don't know what the heck goes on at a Kylie concert (rockingthemike is gonna kill me XD). I mean, from listening to it, I know she has backup singers, but I have no idea what they look like or where they are. From watching the (fuzzy!) YouTube videos, I know that she's wearing a leopard-print catsuit (which is relevant!) and that the stage is bluish with neon lights and stairs in the background. But I can't really see every aspect of it, and I have so been spoiled by SOTDing live songs from professionally shot DVDs/videos that I've watched a gazillion times.

So anyway, first she psychs the crowd up a bit, and announces Bono's presence. And the crowd goes appropriately nuts as he comes out, but you just know there are people turning to whoever they're with and going "Who?" And if the situation were reversed, if Kylie came out at a U2 concert, there'd be people going "Who?"
The song itself is fun and has a great beat. Let me just point out that it wasn't until I decided to SOTD this that I finally listened to the original version. And I know I'm biased, but I think it sucks. I like Robbie Williams, but he just can't hold a candle to Bono. Admittedly I only know a few of his songs, so I'm probably not the best judge, but from what I can tell, in my opinion he sounds crap on the original version of this song. Bono improves it by several miles.
The song is just cute, and like I said, Bono's voice sounds great. It's strong, and shines on the long notes that he holds, such as "'cause I'm never coming baaaaaaack!", the only point where his voice shows any sign of weakness during the whole performance is at the beginning of the line "Well I guess that can be explored", but we'll let that one slide =) But while we're talking about that verse, I've gotta point out that "Take a ride on my twelve cylinder symphony" is my favourite bit of the whole song, for no other reason than that it sounds suggestive *giggles*
I have a lot of little favourite moments in this performance though. Most of them Bono-moments, like in the chorus when they sing "Feel the high" and Bono echoes it with an even stronger "High!". Also I love how into the song Bono seems to be getting, during the "I'm gonna give it all of my love, it's gonna take up all of my love" repetitions, he gets more and more emotion in his voice with every repetition.
I love Kylie too though, especially the way she sounds when she says "when my lips were dry". Actually, on that whole last verse they both sound great. Bono carries the notes so well: "I didn't mean to get so hiiiiiigh!" and "I'm a singer in a baaaaand!", and I absolutely love her retort: "Well I like drummers baby, you're not my bag" Though I must admit, until I finally looked up the lyrics for this song, I thought she was saying "Well I've got troubles baby, you're not my man" which works too =P
And now I must mention the most important part of this performance. As I said before, Kylie's wearing a leopard-print catsuit. This leads to Bono slowly and sexily pulling a silver chain out of his jacket, while wrapping it around his hand. The chain is attached to a kitty collar. Then he swings it around and calls out "Here kitty kitty". God. When I saw that on YouTube, I about died. I am unashamedly in love with Bono, and that was hot. And then after they sing the last part of the song, she takes the collar right out of his hand, and sort of slaps him with the chain as she walks away with it XD They end the song with Bono telling her she's perfect (awww!) and Kylie encouraging the crowd's applause.
All in all, it's a great performance. It's a fun song, and it's a sexy song. Being a Bonogirl, I enjoyed it because Bono doesn't get to do this sort of thing too much anymore. It was great seeing that the sexy swagger he perfected with The Fly character is still alive and well =) Also, Kylie's guitar player is awesomeness, the solo toward the end of the song is fantastic.

I've got lyrics down here, but I should probably point out that I transcribed them myself, and while I tried to differentiate who's singing what at what part, a couple of things made it difficult, like when I can't tell if it's Kylie or her backup singers, or when Bono's singing so loud I can't tell if Kylie's singing with him or not. But it's not that important. Just don't yell at me if I got something wrong, is all I'm saying ;P

Bono = bold, both = italic

When I turn around
I don't want to see anyone sitting down
'Cause ladies and gentlemen
We are in the company of greatness tonight
Let me hear it for BONO!

Me no bubblelicious
Me smoke heavy tar
Me be grooving slowly where you are
Notify my next of kin, 'cause I'm never coming back
I've been dropping beats since Back in Black

And we'll paint by numbers
'Til something sticks
I don't mind doing it for the kids

BONO!

So come on
Jump on board
Take a ride
We're doing it alright
Jump on board
Feel the high
'Cause the kids are alright

You've got a reputation
Well I guess that's to be explored
You're dancing with the chairman of the board
Take a ride on my twelve cylinder symphony
But if you got other plans

The purpose of a woman is to love her man

And we'll paint by numbers
'Til something sticks

What!
Don't mind doing it for the kids

So come on
Jump on board
Take a ride
Yeah we're doing it alright
Jump on board
Feel the high

High!
'Cause the kids are alright

I'm gonna give it all of my loving
lt's gonna take up all of my love
I'm gonna give it all of my loving
lt's gonna take up all of my love
I'm gonna give it all of my loving
lt's gonna take up all of my love
I'm gonna give it all of my loving
lt's gonna take up all of my love

Come down from the ceiling
I didn't mean to get so high
I didn't do what I wanted to do
When my lips were dry
You can't just up and leave me
I'm a singer in a band

We'll I like drummers, baby
You're not my bag

Jump on board
Take a ride

Put those hands up!
Jump on board
Feel the high
Yeah!
Jump on board
Take a ride
Jump on board
Feel the high

'Cause the kids are all right

Shh... here kitty kitty
Shh... here kitty kitty

Taking me on / Jump on board
Letting me down / Take a ride
Making me want you
All night
Taking me on / Jump on board
Letting me down / Feel the high
'Cause the kids are all right

You're perfect
Just make some noise, that's all I can say
Oh yes, oh yes

Favourite lyric:
"Take a ride on my twelve cylinder symphony"

I'm not a fan of neither Kylie nor Robbie Williams, but I've always liked this song in particular. I had no idea there were recordings of Bono singing it with her (I'm such a lazy fan), so Thanks so much :D
My guess is the song is three times better with Bono in it ;P

I love Kylie. I love Bono. I love Robbie Williams. This is quite possibly the worst pop song ever. While the performance does have a sense of surprise, it quickly fades after the first listen.

I able to be critical of the artists and their music (not to suggest that everyone else blindly follows and loves everything an artist puts out). This song just flat out sucks.

While I don't agree that this is the worst pop song ever (because I actually happen to love Robbie and Kylie's version), I have to agree that this rendition is pretty "bleh". Which is disappointing because, like you said, I also love Kylie, Bono, and Robbie Williams. So you'd think there'd be some appealing quality to it considering all of that, but it's not so. I hate admitting it, but... alas, it is true. No me gusta.

I so clearly recall the day this song hit the charts, as it went head-to-head with Beautiful Day for the No.1 spot - and I was so sure Kids would win, as Beautiful Day didn't seem like the type of song that would appeal to anyone except diehard U2 fans, while Robbie and Kylie were both very much the flavour of the month. So I was absolutely ecstatic when U2 surprised me by grabbing the top spot after all, squeezing Kids into #2. :D  (My classmates at school were less impressed - I overheard someone ask the next morning whether Robbie & Kylie were #1, and the other girl replied "No, it's U2" in a really disdainful voice. They proceeded to have a lengthy conversation about how rubbish U2 were - in particular I recall someone commenting on how stupid the muscle shirts from PopMart were, which struck me as a bizarre thing to bitch about in late 2000! - while I sat across the room with my blood quietly boiling.)

So anyway, I never much cared for the original - it's just a typical Robbie Williams song with stupid nonsensical lyrics, although the duet with Kylie admittedly worked quite well. I was therefore slightly disturbed when I found out that was the track they'd chosen for the Bono duet... euchh, it's just so beneath him! Couldn't they have done 'Especially For You' instead? :D  I wasn't *overly* inspired by the first YouTube clips that appeared, either. But it's grown on me a lot since hearing the full, high quality track (and subsequently seeing the full-length video), and I must say I really enjoy it now.

A lot of the things I like about this performance are bits you've already mentioned. Bono definitely makes the song sexy (which the original never really was), with the way he purrs his opening line and later "Well I guess that can be explored...". And it's kind of cool how he throws himself into it completely, even though it's a crappy Robbie Williams song, all in the name of doing Kylie a favour and entertaining her fans. What a guy. ;)  I love his unexpectedly passionate yell on "I didn't mean to get so... HIGH!" - he's certainly won over the crowd by that point, just listen to them scream!  But the best part has got to be his fantastic delivery of "You can't just up and leave me, I'm a singer in a band!", which actually makes that line *work* for the first time ever, since Robbie Williams recorded the song as a solo artist and was never in a proper "band" to begin with. ;p  (It makes the "I like drummers" comeback ten times funnier, too!)  Bono's "Heeerrre, kitty kitty!" was also inspired. *g*  I love the part where they're leaning against each other to sing the "Taking me over..." verse, as in that photograph. It's a real feelgood performance by the end!  I can't help feeling rather disappointed that Kylie wasn't well enough to sing at the U2 concert afterwards - that would have been so much fun, especially if it's true that they had planned to perform Mysterious Ways together!

Incidentally, Kylie's Melbourne concert was on TV the other day (I guess it's the one she's releasing on DVD) and I decided to watch it out of curiosity. It was actually really good, much better than I had expected. I felt quite emotional singing along joyfully to I Should Be So Lucky, which was one of my favourite songs when I was a little kid!  I'd recommend watching it if they show it in the States at all. The most interesting revelation was that she normally performs Kids as a duet with one of the female backing singers, which is just odd - it's way better with Bono! :)
