Wednesday... Wrestle? @ 10:57 pm

bonoffee:
Hmm okay so my title isn't catchy. Never mind that! stay_please and I are sharing these little questions/dilemmas/ways to pass the time so I'll be your resident midweek person. So to start off here's something to get you replying to (maybe)...

Which U2 songs have made you cry?

You get bonus points for having a weird and random choice (not really, I don't do points). For example, and I am being 100% honest here, I once cried to Lady With The Spinning Head (Extended Dance Mix). Seriously. I can't remember why or what sparked it but it was quite bizarre.

Go nuts. :)

EDIT: I forgot to say, you don't have to but if you want to give reasons (if there are any) then do feel free!

How about Running To Stand Still. The performances during the Vertigo Tour were phenomenal. The way Bono treated each lyric so delicately, as if they were baby children, it was perfect.

October. All 2 minutes 20 seconds, has me sobbing like a fat kid denied cake.
Love is Blindness makes me feel like I want to cry, but I never do. I always feel hollow at the end.

Miss Sarajevo and Sometimes you can't make it on your own when they played them live in Milan. It was just incredible!

"stay" makes weep every single time, and "bad."

I never cried to Mothers of the Disappeared til I had a child of my own... one day I heard it come on a mixtape I hadn't played in awhile and I just blew it.
kind of unsettling, actually.

At their 12/04/2005 show in Boston they played Bad and it happened again. Standing in the bomb shelter, one row away from the band at that. I just started bawling and couldn't stop. Oigh.

Running to Stand Still during ZooTV.
Bass Trap (I have no idea why)
Walk On (gives me a catch in the throat)
Hawkmoon (from the LoveTown CDs)
Bad (also from LoveTown)
And when I saw them in Providence, I got choked up during the lines "You love this town, even if it doesn't ring true. You've been all over and it's been all over you" due to my love/hate relationship with Providence.

Stay, definitely (especially at the final "and the night would be enough" and "I'll only hear you"). "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses" (during "the doors you open, I just can't close... don't turn around....") I've shed many a tear to. I don't think I have any weird choices.

I'm surpised no one's said "The Saints Are Coming." Maybe it doesn't "count" cuz it's w/another group. Or maybe I'm just odd. *shrug*

I actually get a little chill, and a sad hole in my heart, every time I watch the video. The song doesn't really do it for me, though...

I wept like a baby when they played All I Want is You at the end of the show I attended (São Paulo, Brazil - Vertigo tour). I'd just been expecting "40", and... well. Stronger than me.

Now that I think about it, I cried during several songs that day (most of them odd and normally not worth crying over--case in point: Desire. Oh, and The First Time) But never mind it; that wasn't your question.

Only one album version of U2's has made me cry: Kite. I've developed the awful habit of listening to it nonstop every time my grandfather goes into surgery (and that's happened a few times), and it inevitably leads to my breaking down and bawling.

My grandmother passed away in September, and I had to drive from Milwaukee to Minneapolis before she died, then back to Milwaukee for a day of school, and then BACK to Minneapolis for the funeral and I had my iPod on shuffle and "40" came on and I just couldn't control myself.

Also, Running to Stand Still and "Drowning Man"

seconds. after the interlude where "i wanna be an airforce ranger /etc" and the drum beats back up ahhhhh i'm crazy.
also when its quiet and im alone, drowning man and exit makes me sob.
i dont know why, i just feel overwhelmed by intense emotion when i hear it.

In the weird category: Last Night On Earth. And Zooropa, also. I dunno why, I'm just nuts like that. And both of these were while I was driving, also...I think maybe I cry more easily while I'm driving, because I'm by myself and I know for sure no one can walk in on me, not like when I'm just in my room.

In the not as weird category: Kite (just before I went away to college and was feeling sad and unsure about leaving home), and just about the entirety of Achtung Baby (usually when I was going through weird relationshippy things I'd pull this one out).

And in the happy category: Streets! Only when I'm seeing it live, though.

So many songs, but Running to Stand Still (especially the ZooTV version) is the first to come to mind. I have such a strong personal connection to that song, and it just breaks my heart. Love is Blindness always gets me too. And really, there are just so many songs that have gotten caught up in my emotions at one point or another and made me cry. Those are mostly the usual contenders though.

The First Time is the only U2 song that I cry to repeatedly. I think it's just because it's beautiful.

Bad (tons of personal connection), same as With or Without You.

Right after my brother left for Iraq I started bawling in the car while listening to Walk On.
