Hello Hello!!

Doesn't U2 deserve some recognition?? @ 08:26 pm

t4_flirt:
I'm currently feelin: pissed off pissed off
I'm currently hearin: the stupid Grammys

WTF? Mary J. Blige wins a grammy for an album that only got recognition because of her (really shitty) cover of "One" and she can't even bother to thank U2!?!?!?!? I know Bono has an Africa complex, but really....they need to be more careful who they lent their talents too. She listed every goddamned person who worked on her album, but forgets 4 very important Irish people. This is an injustice to U2 and we as fans need to get together and say enough is enough.

She won a Grammy for that??
I remember my co-worker told me she's forever scarred by the performance of Mary J Blige's cover of "One" during last year's Grammy. The original Achtung Baby version is still unbeatable. Although the one with Michael Stipe is a pretty close second.

she won a grammy for album of the year, and now just got one for something else...and was like, "I thanked everyone I could possibly thank earlier, so I'll keep this brief..." and my hubby and i were 'Oh no you didn't! You freakin' forgot U2!!!!'

I think I'll start skipping the Grammys...last year was horrid b/c she sang(or screeched, whatever) with them and BUTCHERED one of the best U2 songs ever recorded, and now she gets to win grammys for an album that never would have made it without said butchered cover.

I think you're overreacting a little. I really hated her version of One, but Mary J. Blige is a lot more talented than that song showed, and I don't doubt that she probably deserved the Grammy. One definitely isn't the only thing that called attention to that album. I didn't see her acceptance speech, but chances are she was hurrying to get through thanking as many people as she could before they cut her off. In the long run, it was probably more important for her to thank people who'd worked on the whole album than on just one song, especially since behind-the-scenes people don't get usually get much of the spotlight.

I definitely don't think it's an injustince. I'm also a little confused about where you're going with "I know Bono has an Africa complex."

If you really believe that, you really need to get out from under your U2 rock. :) I'm no fan of MJB or the cover of One btw. But come on, you don't believe all her success is down to U2?

While I do agree her cover of One is terrible, I think it's too much to assume that she only got any kind of recognition for a whole album because of said song. She is in the media for a good while to have her own fanbase and recognition without U2's help, although I do not ignore the fact that covering a very popular song can get you even more fans etc.

Also, it's not the end of the world. She surely payed the royalties due and if she forgot to thank them. It's not like she's claiming she composed the song. She must have forgot with all the fuss that must be winning something like that or just isn't much polite. Not a big deal. *shrugs*

Also, some people who win major awards forget to thank important people. Like their spouses. It happens. It is not a big deal.

With a voice like MJB's, she doesn't have to thank anyone.

Well...I'll be honest here, it's pretty messed up that she didn't at the very least thank them, but it's not really a big deal. I won't lose sleep over it. It happens.
They've won, was is it, 22 grammies all together? They get plenty of recognition. Even if it's not all positive, they DO get noticed. Trust me on that.

Wow. People still watch the Grammies? A ceremony that nominates someone for "best new artist" who's debut album came out in 1998? Geniuses, all of them...

In the R&B world, which is Mary's genre and the category in which she won, her album got recognition for pretty much every song on it aside from "One." Also, what's Mary J Blige got to do with Bono's so-called "Africa complex?"

Should I be this amused that the poster hasn't responded to any of the comments made in the thread she started?

A part of me is a bit glad she didn't thank U2. I'm hoping to never have to associate U2 and "One" with that God-awful woman again.

I believe it's "Don't U2 deserve some recognition??" Doesn't implies the singular, and U2 is made up of four individuals.

Yes, I'm being a pain.

I often wonder about things like that, but 'U2' refers to a band. Singular. To the *collection* of the four individuals. So I think the singular is appropriate. I think you would say "U2 is the best band on the planet" because that can only be rephrased as "The best band on the planet is U2". But you would say "Those musicians are unbeatable".

You need to be careful how you use the word injustice.

There are things in the world worth getting worked up over. This is not one of them.

And, it seems, I am quite out numbered for thinking that Mary J. Blige is very talented. Right, because 8 Grammy nominations must mean that she's shit and that her album was shit.
