Hello Hello!!

Weekend Wrangle @ 11:28 pm

stay_please:
I'm currently hearin: You're The Reason I'm Leaving - Franz Ferdinand

Wow, I didn't realize you all would have so many opinions on hair! It seems Adam and Bono made the most mistakes, with Monkee Edge thrown in for good measure, and Larry... well his hair hasn't changed much over the years. Just Baby!Larry, FacialHair!Larry, and Mullet!Larry (which you couldn't mention).

A lot of fans were disgruntled with the decision to release U218. Me? I was a sucker and bought the deluxe edition, the video collection, and just for good measure, my mother got me the single-disc edition for Christmas. Fan much?
While I understand the idea of trying to pull in all the new fans that jumped on the HTDAAB bandwagon, yah, it was still a cash move. Under that logic, there should be some sort of "best of" release after EVERY album, and that would be just silly. So, businessmen as well as musicians, in the end it was probably a very smart release on U2's part, and hey... we got two new songs out of it.

Your wrangle this weekend... you get to be a part of the decision making process to release U218 (just jump back a coupla months, eh?). Unfortunately, as the Sweepstakes "Help U2 Become Richer" Winner, you only get to veto one track and add one other. What do you nix? What do you add?

While I take extreme exception to how few '80s tracks are included, under the above-mentioned logic, I get it. You don't wanna go too far back and alienate the audience you're trying to attract.

So, I'm going to get rid of "Pride (In The Name of Love)" because that track really doesn't do it for me. Very redundant chorus.

Well, I was gonna fool around with track order, but nothing will make me happy but a complete rehaul. I'll just settle for saying I'd like to add "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" I was thinking of going with something from Pop... maybe "Discotheque" (if I have to stick with singles) but "Stay" deserves the spot more.

I think I might be the only one who doesn't like "Stay"

Out - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. I know it's a big emotional-catharsis song for Bono, but I just dun like it, hokay?

In - Until the End of the World, because it kicks arse in all areas, music, lyric, theme, punch, the lot.

Absolutely IN --> Until the end of the world (one of their best songs ever, IMO)

OUT --> Sweetest Thing (yeah, it's sweet, but not their best)

Except that UTEOTW was never a single. So it wouldn't really work on a "singles" album, would it?

I agree, btw, that it's in their top 5 best songs, I'm just saying it doesn't fit the parameters of the album.

yeah, you're right, I didn't think of that... it's a "singles" album after all.... mmmh... well, let's go for Discotheque then ;-) (that was released as a single, right? *scratches head*)

Totally, Discotheque was the first single off Pop.

The Fly should be on there, it's crazy that it wasn't. I'd probably drop Stuck In A Moment.

I would drop The Sweetest Thing and replace it with Mofo. Really, I'd like to drop any of the songs from ATYCLB (except for Walk On) and replace them all with anything from Zooropa or Pop, but that's not allowed, and I hate The Sweetest Thing a lot more than anything off of ATYCLB.

As I noted to another poster, Mofo wasn't a single. Again, I say, Mofo is an awesome song, but the premise of the album is 18 Singles

Weren't Mofo and If God Will Send His Angels released simultaneously as a dual-single sort of thing?

U2Wanderer says so.

But if it's not a singley enough single, I'd gladly trade it for Last Night on Earth.

Hmmm...I know they did some Mofo remixes and released those as an EP, so not sure if that counts as a single. It certainly never got any airplay.

IGWSHA on the other hand was definitely a single (it had a video and everything). In fact, it's probably one of the better singles discs (includes Two Shots of Happy, Slow Dancing, and the Edge solo version of SBS live from Sarajevo).

This one's a toughie... it took me a while, but I finally came to terms with the U218 tracklist and now have a hard time imagining how I would change it!

OUT - possibly The Saints are Coming: not because it isn't a good song (it's pretty snazzy in MY book, anyway) but because I think it could've been released just as the charity single. With Saints on U218, I think some of the incentive to buy the single may've been lost.

OUT, TOO - Elevation. Sure, it was pretty big and the band still played it on the Vertigo tour but, of the four ATYCLB singles, it feels like the weakest.

IN - I Will Follow oughta be on there. (Had U2 released UTEOTW or Bad as official singles, though, that would've made the decision MUCH harder.) It'd be nice to have something from Zooropa or Pop, too, but there's really only so much space on a CD!

...unless they released a double-disc Best Of comp after the next album... *rubs chin, sighs, hopes that doesn't actually happen*

I was having a hard time with this, but then it just hit me: I'd take out "Sweetest Thing" and replace it with "I Will Follow". U218 is weighted so heavily to the more recent stuff, there should be *some* representation from at least one of their first two records. And while "Sweetest Thing" is a great song (even if I do prefer the original b-side demo version), it's the one I feel can go without too much loss.

I'd take out Sweetest Thing (a remake of a B-side that was released as part of another Best Of album...you're kidding right?) and slide in either I Will Follow or Out of Control (which was fortunately released as a single, and thus qualifies).

I also agree they don't need 4 from ATYCLB and 2 from HTDAAB.

If I could remove a couple of those, I'd throw in Stay and either Please or Discotheque.

Out: Sweetest Thing

Even though it's one of my favorites, like someone else said, it was a remake of a Streets b-side that was released on the best of 80-90 album. Kind of lame.

In: Stay (Faraway, So Close!)

Bono's favorite song, and a representative for Zooropa.

Out - Desire. Most definitely. I might be the only person who just doesn't like that song.

In - Discotheque. For sure, it's either that or Do You Feel Loved. Pop needs more love. It doesn't feel loved! XD
