Monday Bloody Monday

How many people, besides me, had some of the lyrics to "Sunday Bloody Sunday" running in their heads when hearing about the shooting at Virginia Tech?

Alright, maybe it is the wrong day of the week in the title, but the lyrics are eerily appropriate:

I can't believe the news today
I can't close my eyes and make it go away

I think of 8 years ago, seeing the news flash on CNN--another shooting in Colorado.  Another disturbed mind.  Another kid with a gun:

How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long?

Yet, in the age of 24-hour news, it's easy to become jaded, to become numb to random violence:

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV is reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tommorow they die

Tuesday night, the news showed pictures of the candelight vigil, on the path the killer took across the campus:

Tonight, we can be as one.

People from all around the world are showing their support for the families and students, reaching out on-line with letters, e-mails, blogs.  All around the world, "Hokies" unite:

Wipe your tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Wipe your bloodshot eyes

Anyway, it was just a thought.
