Hello Hello!!

Midweek Question @ 11:36 pm

bonoffee:
Right, so we've done Edge and we've done Larry (not literally, of course) and now it's time to discuss someone else. Only two left - which will I go for next? *drum roll* ...

What is your favourite Bono vocal?

Yep, I'm choosing Bono this week. He's definitely one of my favourite singers, if not my all-time favourite, and there are obviously hundreds of songs to choose from here. You don't have to stick to U2 stuff, feel free to include anything from his many side projects and extra-curricular activities. I'm not even going to bother listing everything I love, because there's just way too many, so I'll select a few myself and then let you guys take over.

With or Without You - possessive and sexy, I wouldn't mind if he sang that to me!
Walk On - it's so uplifting, the ways he sings on this, and I always feel better after I hear it.
Bad - just beautiful (I quite adore the Rattle&Hum version, too).
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own - need I explain? No, didn't think so (thank God :P).
Can't Help Falling In Love - I blabbed on about this in SOTD way back when - I think it could be his best.
One - perfect, in my opinion, especially the studio version which will always be my fave.
In A Little While - broken and hungover, fits the song perfectly, very soulful.
Your Blue Room - because it is sex, quite frankly. Low, almost speaking, contrasting with the falsetto. YAY!

I am so on the verge of making the longest list you have ever seen. But I'll restrain myself! Over to you.

Trying to list all my favourites would probably take me all night, but Can't Help Falling In Love is without a doubt his best.

Haha, it seems like you could list just about every U2 song and describe what his voice does to you in each one ;o)

For some reason the first one that comes to mind is Wild Irish Rose - he just sounds so... Irish in it *LOL* And I love the echo on his voice, it's just very unique.

I don't know if it's necessarily my favorite, but, like you, there are SO many I could've listed, I just thought I'd throw a rarity out there ;o)

Yeah, as you said you could list all songs and choose a reason why his vocal in that particular song stands out for you.

But If I had to choose I'd pick 'Sometimes you can't make it on your own'. I can't remember off hand which Vertigo show it was but there's one particular live version where he gets the note on siiing' so high and holds it for so long. It's amazing.

I think 'Sometimes' is particularly stunning, yep. It's got so much emotion. If you find the version, let me know, would love to hear that one!

My #1 is SHFWILF, hands DOWN. I think his voice sounds so strong throughout the song, his voice was at its peak during that time. And in that song I just love how he screams out "all my shame, all my shame", I love every note really, he does it flawlessly. Miss those days...

Hawkmoon 269 comes in second. *THAT* song is sex, my friends!

WOWY, Bad, One Tree Hill, WGRYWH, Streets, Unchained Melody, Red Hill, and Night and Day are all high up there too.

Haven't heard CHFIL in a long time.

BTW can I just take a moment to mention it is positively TRAGIC that Bono never covered The Beatles' "Oh Darling" in the 80s? He could have ripped that song to SHREDS back then...

GOOD CHOICES! Especially Still Haven't Found. I agree, incredible vocal. One of my favourite U2 songs. It's a shame he can't quite hit those same notes now, but on the other hand his voice can do very different things. I guess it's just how it goes!

I second Hawkmoon, as well. All the raw sexual energy. Mmm.

Everything off of the Irving Plaza mini-concert in 2000.

Mysterious Ways - ZooTV Sydney

I also have little bits and pieces that I like... it's kind of obsessive. For example, the way he says "niiiight" in "the night it is aching" in Electrical Storm, the "Freeeee" from Native Son, the first few tender lines of Miracle Drug, and his opera singing on the Vertigo versions of Miss Sarejevo.

When he sings the opera on Miss Sarajevo during live shows. Good god, that's amazing stuff.

Until The End Of The World - recorded, live, whenever. All four of them rock that song so hard in their different ways, it blows my mind.

I wholeheartedly agree with your choices here. I made my mum listen to the Miss Sarajevo that's on the All Because of You single, and even she thought it was great (my mum's not big on U2).

UTEOW - so much love for that song. As you say, they're all on form.

Wow, I don't know if I could pick a favorite. Two immediately spring to mind, though - "Slow Dancing" (obviously the one where he sings, heh) and "In a Lifetime". I remember going on a school trip once and thinking that there was just no way I could /not/ take "In a Lifetime" with me, because I couldn't spend even a few hours without hearing that raw, passionate vocal.

Sometimes you can't make it on your own - of course
Miss Sarajevo at concents
Jools Holland version of If You Wear That Velvet Dress imho, is TEH SEX
Mercy - just because his voice sounds so free
I'd probably add either MLK or Heartland as well. But then there's Your Blue Room and With or Without You and Love is Blindness as well... Too many... *sigh*

October? :D I think the Under a blood red sky version of Gloria is much better. A good example of a song that is better live than in the studio.

A Sort Of Homecoming - I think it really shows off his range...especially the "oh" part after the first verse, after "on borderland we run". If you listen closely, you can't hear a breath in between. At least, I can't, and I tend to pick up on that during songs. So...yeah. Bono's amazing.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of their covers, but I love his voice in U2's cover of Unchained Melody. Also, the 'opera' in The Hands That Built America.
