I know a lot about Irish Gaelic, enough to know that the grammar is not systemic, so translating stuff is hell if you don't know the language well, I also know that it's why Bono was kicked out of university after 2 weeks, he failed Gaelic in school, and it's a requirement to know the national language in order to attend university. Poor guy, it's a tough language, and he said he really would have liked to attend uni. :P

Anyway, where I lurk much of the time when I want things translated it http://www.irishgaelictranslator.com like I said the grammar is difficult, so this isn't some computerized thing, it's forum, you sign up and ask your questions and it's filled with people from beginner to expert who will work on it for you, just for fun, the beginners will let you know that they're beginners and probably tell you to wait around till someone who knows it better can check it for you. Anyway, if you're interested in the language it's a good site and has links to other good sites, so check it out!!

Oh, so the first time I just skimmed your post and didn't notice the tattoo bit... THESE PEOPLE KNOW TATTOOS, they won't steer you wrong, and you certainly don't want a mistake in a tattoo, so that forum will help you out a ton! Even if you already have it right, it couldn't hurt to check it with them just for some peace of mind

wow, that was some good help here! I will try that forum - asking won't hurt, and I certainly want to have it inked right ;-) plus, I'll be over in Dublin in two weeks (for the first time, wohooo :-D), so maybe I can ask someone over there, too.
But what you say about grammar and such.... Gaelic really seems to be one of the most difficult languages to learn! so sad Bono didn't make it at university just because of Gaelic... I remember I read about this in his biography, but little did I know how difficult this language really is... *le sigh*

Someone over at another lj community suggested siúil leat as translation... what do you think?

i joined a similar forum a few years back when i wanted to get a tattoo done in lotr sindarin.. the 'experts' made me do my own research at the beginning but did indeed help me get it right in the end, which was fabulous... me thinks though, that as with sindarin (which is actually a form of celtic and other languages all morphed) it wont be just a matter of finding two words and sticking them together, and be forwarned that you might get more than one version... just as in english there is more than one way to say the same thing. Good luck!
