Hello Hello!!

Weekend Wrangle: DVD Showdown Edition @ 11:52 pm

stay_please:
With the release of Popmart to DVD, we have the complete U2 full-length concert releases. Well, since 1988 anyway. I'm sure they'll eventually go back and give us stuff like Red Rocks and whatnot.

So this Weekend Wrangle is pretty much for anyone who's seen all (or most) of these concerts. It doesn't matter which format, because it's the same thing (only much shinier!). And so it goes... I've taken all the songs that play in each concert... or each concert since it's release.... or hell, even 2 of the concerts!

Our concerts are: Rattle & Hum, ZooTV Live from Sydney, Popmart, Elevation: Boston, Elevation: Slane (AKA: Go Home), and Vertigo: Chicago. Yes, the Elevation tour gets double the chances, it's the only one with two official releases! (Well, Vertigo will get a little double-representation, 'cause of the U218 Bonus Disc.)

So, what are some of your favorite performances?

"All I Want Is You" (studio version) cannot be improved. I don't know why they play it live. You can't do better than perfect.

Ever heard the AIWIY/Bad medley that was done at a few Lovetown gigs? That was incredible. I think a few of the Lovetown full AIWIYs also topped the studio version, but otherwise, it's been not as good live. The Popmart version is particularly boring.

As far as I'm concerned, almost anything on RAH is a default win (though ZooTV Bullet has a lock, and I go back and forth on whether RTSS was better on RAH or ZooTV). The Elevation and Vertigo DVDs largely bore me, mainly due to bad song selection. Nobody needed to hear the half-asleep Elevation Tour version of WOWY, for example.

Oh, and the only remotely listenable version of One is the Popmart Sarajevo performance and it's not on video, so I didn't vote on that question.

Not to be the annoying one who points out "B-b-but... you're missing an option!" but I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For was also performed at Popmart Mexico City...

That was difficult. My only definite choice where I didn't have to think too much was Bad from Rattle and hum.

And I chose Slane for WTSHNN because I was just watching it and that song really takes off at this show, imo :D

Why no options featuring Under A Blood Red Sky? *is confused* *has only VHS copies of most of the above anyway*

IMO, the best performance of Bad was at Live Aid. :)

I just rewatched Live Aid (well, the U2 performance anyway), and I just have to say that definitely the best performance of "Bad" - ever, maybe - was at Live Aid.

Heh, I voted for ZooTV every time it was an option, except for One. (I'm not sure I'd describe the PopMart version as my "favourite" exactly, but it's the only one that stands out as being really powerful.)

Enlarged list with my opinion (bold text).

"The Fly" (ZooTV / Elevation: Boston / Vertigo: Chicago)

"I Will Follow" (Popmart / Elevation: Boston / Vertigo: Milan)

"Pride" (Rattle and Hum / ZooTV / Popmart / Elevation: Slane / Vertigo: Chicago)

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" (Rattle and Hum / Popmart / Elevation: Boston / Elevation: Slane / Vertigo: Chicago)

"Beautiful Day" (Elevation: Boston / Elevation: Slane / Vertigo: Chicago) ???

"Elevation" (Elevation: Boston / Elevation: Slane / Vertigo: Chicago / Vertigo: Milan)

"Angel of Harlem" (Rattle and Hum / ZooTV / Elevation: Slane)

"Mysterious Ways" (ZooTV / Popmart / Elevation: Boston / Elevation: Slane / Vertigo: Chicago)

"Gone" (Popmart / Elevation: Boston)

"Desire" (Rattle and Hum / Popmart / Elevation: Boston / Elevation: Slane)

I skipped "Wake Up Dead Man", "Staring at the Sun" and "Stay" because it has the only one full performance. And many doubles of ATYCLB songs in Elevation and HTDAAB songs in Vertigo are skipped, because their versions sounds too close. It is too hard to choose Beautiful Day version.
