Okay, so this has probably happened to all of us for some reason or another... but just for conversation:

When's the last time you got mad at U2? And why?

I can't recall ever being mad at them as a band, but Bono makes me want to smack him upside of the head occasionally. I know why he has to suck up to that idiot Bush, I just find it really hard to take.

On the contrary, I find it delightfully refreshing that Bono is one of the few celebrities who has NOT gone out of his or her way to badmouth the President of the United States.

Sometimes celebrities should shut the hell up about politics and realize that just because they're rich and famous doesn't mean they know jack squat about foreign policy.

Which also leads me to the last time I got mad at U2: when I found out that they were collaborating with Green Day. I can't stand Green Day or anything they stand for.

Never, really. I roll my eyes at Bono sometimes, but that's about as far as it goes.

Same here, and even the eye-rolling is with a hint of bemusement. ;)

I usually find myself wanting to smack Bono, but other than that...I don't really get 'mad' at them. LOL.

(Although...I was kinda pissed that they did that horrendous duet with Mary J. Blige. It pretty much ruined 'One' for me. *sigh*)

God, I totally agree. That version was...heresy! You can't do that to one of the best songs ever...aghgahgggg!

By the way, I got mad with the release of u218. The same songs again and again. It was like: get into the studio, create something new and when the decade ends just release 'the best of 2000-2010' or something but don't laugh at us!

I stayed mad at them for quite awhile about ATYCLB. They won me back with HTDAAB, though.

Heh, really? Whereas I loved ATYCLB, and was less impressed with HTDAAB! But it was on the Vertigo tour that I finally got to see them live, after being a fan for over 10 years, so HTDAAB will always have that memory associated with it for me.

High ticket prices mainly...

The fact that they did some pretty weasely things to get around paying taxes in Ireland kind of ticked me off.

I can't believe you're the only one to bring that up. That's #1 on my list. I'm trying to convince myself Bono got outvoted on that decision (which still makes me made at the others).

My more minor complaints include basically turning into a marketing empire sucking every last dollar possible from their fans by releasing 1-2 compilation albums after every album of new material, with the obligatory one song you don't have to get everyone to buy it. And the u2.com membership is a rip-off, and I wrote to them multiple times for the propaganda discount and received no response.

However, compared to other big acts their ticket prices are reasonable, the existance and affordability of GA tickets is priceless, and Bono is an amazing individual, so I forgive them.

The whole ticket fiasco with the first leg of the Vertigo tour - when long-time Propaganda and then .com members - couldn't get presale... or any... tickets. And then Adam's brother brushed off everyone's anger with some flippant comment.

That was bad. There was a lot of fury there.

But then it was all fixed and made right and I was happy.

I get mad at U2 because they take all my money. I cannot resist anything U2. If I see it and I don't have it, I buy it. This also goes with concerts...because one U2 show is not good enough for me. They definitely take all my money.

I don't know if I would say "mad", but recent collaborations and contributions of various sorts have had me wondering what on Earth they're thinking... I've been going "WTF?" rather a lot over the past decade, actually, and it's hard to see either irony or gravity in most of these collaborations, anymore. (Exception being Bono singing If You Wear That Velvet Dress w/ Jools Holland's band, because that was just plain hot. ;)

Yeah, rerecording One with Mary J. Blige really annoyed me. When I heard, I was like "AGH! NO! KILL IT WITH FIRE!" But then again, I have hated that woman for a very long time.

Oh and the Spider-Man musical annoyed me as well, simply because I think the whole concept of a Spider-Man musical ffs is the dumbest idea ever.

I remember being angry about Bono selling clothes...but then looked into it and changed my mind because at first I thought he was selling out, like when a movie star wants to be a director, Michael Jordan wants to play baseball, Eddie Murphy wants to sing!! etc...

but the clothes are apparently organic and the factory employs workers who's families will benefit from A-having jobs and B-the families have member with AIDS and really have need of medicines etc...so all in all, instead of just giving away money he gave them all a sense of pride, I'd say, to be able to work and not be charity cases...some people have a lot of pride but this way it would definitely make the worker feel as if they were doing their part toward taking care of themselves-hats off to Bono.

Cheers
Jade

that's what i said. it basically RUINED "One" for me.

i'd much rather hear the version Michael Stipe and Mike Mills did w/ Adam and Larry back in '93. now THAT was a good collaboration. :)

Y'know, I've never gotten mad at them. They've done some music that I've liked less than other things they have done and sometimes I wish Bono would stop saving the world and make some god damn music, since that's his job an' all... but not really mad.
(Then again, I don't really get upset at musicians or actors, because half the stuff people get pissed off at them for are things said in interviews taken entirely out of context.)

I'm going to have to agree with a few of the others and say the Collaboration with Mary J. Blige. The thing that really pissed me off about that was the fact that on her album it said on a little sticker "Featuring NEW SINGLE 'One' featuring U2!" when it made it sound like she wrote the song.

Which I know isn't completely U2's fault, but nonetheless...

oh i KNOW. she used that song to launch her album, and never once thanked them for it. her lack of appreciation pissed me off more than anything else.
