Hello Hello!!

"Hannah Montana" getting priority over U2:3D?? @ 08:37 am

t4_flirt:
I'm currently feelin: bitchy bitchy

This is for all the USA fans going to see U2:3D...

Apparently my local AMC theater (AMC 12 in Sarasota,FL) has pulled its U2:3D poster from the floor and is not getting the movie, thanks to Disney's release of the Hannah Montana 3D concert. (Which btw, is being billed as the first event of its' kind--last time I checked, that was false advertising.)

If this is happening in my city, how many other cities are giving Disney and Hannah Montana priority over U2?? Everyone planning on seeing U2:3D needs to call and check with their local theaters and MAKE SURE you are actually getting it.

As for me, luckily I have an IMAX up in Tampa that is showing it...an hour's drive and $13 a ticket isn't the end of the world. I still feel like writing a strongly worded letter to Disney, and also finding a way to inform our beloved boys that some teenybopper is stealing their thunder. *sigh*

Yeah, I don't know why the site doesn't list those theaters that have Real D technology. My local theater still has the U23D poster up though. I'm going to call and ask sometime this week because I know that they are also playing the Hannah Montana junk too.
Luckily I have an IMAX in Fort Lauderdale. Even though it's like an hour away. What shit.

yeah...Tampa's a good hour or so from me.

and what REALLY sucks is that my hubby and I had AMC gift cards given to us by family members as Christmas gifts, knowing we wanted to see the movie more than once.

There is a very simple reason for this: Whether you like it or not, Hannah Montana is insanely popular amongst young 'uns and teenagers, while the U2 Goes Home special that ran at U.S. thanksgiving a few years back (showing an hour's worth of songs from the Slane show) was the lowest rated program EVER for whichever network ran it. This is about theatres knowing what butters their bread. No reason to take it so personally.

Besides with lots of releases, it's common for distributors to run a flick in a few markets to see how it does before deciding how wide the release should be. So if U2:3D is really all that and a bag of chips (and I'm just as interested to see it as the rest of you), eventually it will be playing on as many screens as possible.

It's not her 'popularity' that has me riled. It's the fact that U2:3D is being YANKED from my theater. The poster was up and everything...

It's also the fact that Disney is falsely advertising their Hannah Montana special as the first of its' kind that irks me. U2 has put a lot of time, effort, and money into this film, only to be upstaged by some teenybopper that Disney has decided is the new Hilary Duff(who was the new Britney, etc, etc, etc)?

Dang. . .I wasn't going to get it in the first place, but that's seriously messed up. U2 is way better than Hannah Montanna any day.

Yeah, a ladyfriend of mine loves the show, and she's like... 17 years old... She send me a youtube sample, and I went: "OMFG!!! You're serious? How can you watch this crap!?" Well, It was just a thought... I didn't say it to her.

But Ok. Hannah Montana is much more popular then a U2 movie, because of the kids. But, I think, that if you advertise enough for the U2 movie, more people will come to the theaters, because all the little kids are going to Hannah Montana anyway.

Ah wel..

Problem is, the parents of these kids will have to take them to see the Hannah Montana movie -- and the demographic the parents are in no doubt represents a large chunk of the market for the U2 movie. (Thankfully my daughter's never seen Hannah Montana -- only U2. ;)

I checked the IMAX theater about a week ago, and the poster is up - the website and the newspaper listed it too. (I'm in Sacramento, California)

I know Hannah Montana is popular among tweens, but would it really get more of an audience than the U2 3D concert? Didn't every show for the Vertigo tour sell out? I know they don't have a new album or anything now, but seriously, is Hannah Montana more popular overall? If so, that's sad. It just seems like a passing fad.

Hannah Montana is the newest passing "blonde singer" fad...she's the new Hillary Duff. *eyeroll*

The problem doesn't seem to be with the IMAX theaters, it seems to be with regular old movie theaters. I think that may be because U2:3D is being released to both IMAX and regular movie theaters, while the Hannah Montana movie is only being released to regular theaters.

*growls*

Considering I haven't heard a peep from my local theatre about U23D and several things about Hannah Montana, it'll probably and sadly wind up being the same here. I'm refraining from going on a rant about the whole thing, but just barely.

Also, I don't care how far away I have to drive, I'm gonna go see it. *is vexed*

Agreed.

Though I do hope it's closer rather than farther o.O

Man, apparently my theater isn't the only one then. This morning I was getting ready to find out the showtimes for U23D, and it turned out that the only IMAX theater in my neighborhood (King of Prussia, PA) is also showing Hannah Montana!! Aarrgg!!! And so now I have to make plans for a mini vacation to drive all the way up to Boston or something to catch it. Geez...

It's playing in Harrisburg. This annoys me to NO END, as I live in Conshohocken, and getting to the KoP IMAX takes me all of... 15 minutes (including parking).

Thanks for the info about Harisburg. I actually started to look into driving up there to see it.
But here's some good news. I checked fandango.com and it looks like KOP Imax is going to show U23D! But I think only for a short period of time (you can only get tickets online for Jan 23rd and Jan 24th). So go get your tickets now. I'm gonna try to go to the 9pm show on 1/23.

I signed up for the alert thing. It didn't work, but I checked back and... BOOM!
Tickets for the 5pm show are bought and waiting to be printed when we get there. Very exciting, very exciting.

Cinema listing

(Link)
If you are in the US or Canada visit http://www.u23dmovie.com/ to see a list of cinemas showing the concert from Jan 23rf

If you are in the UK or Ireland you can find cinema information at http://www.u23d.co.uk/

While I agree that it is disappointing that the release is limited think back to the box office disaster of Rattle and Hum. I'm a huge U2 fan but if I owned a movie theatre I would look for what is going to make me the most profit and sadly it would be Hannah Montana.

Keep your chins up though all you American/Canadian/UK people/Irish people. At least there are release dates for when some of you might see it. For those of us who live in the rest of the world we are still waiting.

Uh-oh. Well luckily the IMAX 'round here will have it no matter what, tix are already on sale, but unluckily, I wanted to go somewhere else 'cause the IMAX is far away and unimpressive.

Damn you, Hannah Montana! DAMN YOU! *shakes fist angrily*

I have no idea yet if I'll be able to see it at all (driving more than three hours to see it is really unfeasable for me, despite my love for U2), and at the moment, short of calling every RealD theater within a 3 hour drive (which, given my location, includes cities in five different states) I have no idea if I'll have any chance of seeing it, as the theater websites are all lame and don't want to give showtimes more than about four days in advance *grumbles*
