Bono and Michael Huchins @ 07:58 pm

rooms_on_fire:
I'm currently feelin: anxious anxious
I'm currently hearin: U2- One, Live from Mexico City

I used to know the answer but now I can't remember.

After seeing U2 3d yesterday, I've been watching a lot of U2 concerts. I'm watching Popmart Mexico City right now and I noticed a lot of mentions of Michael Huchins. How exactly were he and Bono connected? I vaguely remember some interview with Bono talking about him but now that's faded.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

From what I understood, they were just friends... possibly neighbors at one point.

Bono and Hutch were really close friends since the 80's. They lived next door to each other in the south of france, and used to end up sleeping out on the beach and hopping each other's fences. During the break between zootv and Pop they hung out alot and got super close. Bono did the final vocals on Michael Hutchence's song "slide away" on his solo cd. it's a brilliant song.

Bono wrote Stuck in a Moment in reaction to Hutch's death.

(I'm sorta a michael hutchence GEEEEK so to me, them being super good friends is like overload)

"Slide away" is sooooooooooooo beautiful especially when you know the condition in which it was done. Michael passed away as he was working on his solo album.."slide away" was kind of half-done when he died...so, Bono did some vocals so that the song could feature on the posthume solo album of Michael Hutchence.

"Slide Away" is one of my absolute favorite songs ever. It breaks my heart every time I listen to it, but..yeah.

It also broke my heart, the day after the 10th anniversary of Micheal's death, Bono and Edge did that short gig in...England somewhere, and played bits of a couple INXS songs. Haven't listened to that bootleg yet, but still...I already know it's beautiful.

As you can see from the comments, they were friends, also at the Popmart concert in Sydney in 98 he dedicated "Gone" to him. He may have done it at other shows too, but that is the one I was at ;-)

He did that quite a bit on the last shows of the PopMart tour.

He also pulled up a girl from the audience to play during the Elevation Vegas show (presumably) because she had an INXS shirt on.

I wrote a post about One from the Mexico City show, with Bono's emotional tribute to Michael Hutchence. Might be of interest if anyone missed it the first time around.
