Battle Of The Videos: Round 8 @ 11:34 pm

canadanne:
It was incredibly close between Numb, Lemon and Stay when I went to bed on Wednesday night, but there was a flurry of votes for Stay in the end, leaving it with a healthy lead. *tries to be happy for it, even though she really wanted Lemon to win...*

ROUND 8: POP (PART 1)

The videos are:

Discothèque [YouTube link]
Lypton Village People? But it's the pelvic thrusts, that really drive you insa-a-a-a-a-ane!

Discothèque (DM Deep Club Mix)
Mirrorball! Lemons! U2 Space Invaders! Dancing Lego U2!! (Gah, this video has disappeared from YouTube since the other day. You can watch it on U2.com if you're a member - it's the second video link - or download it here.)

Staring At The Sun [YouTube link]
Oooooo, sparkly!

Staring At The Sun (Miami Version) [YouTube link]
Directed by Morleigh. Mostly features Bono pratting about in various hats.

Last Night On Earth [YouTube link]
Just a normal day in the U2 universe: picking up supermodels, stealing cars, kicking corpses...

Ahh, that was a tough choice because I think they're all great - well umm yeah, it's always a tough choice when voting in this poll - but Discothèque is just too priceless. *g*

It HAD to be Discothèque. I was half-tempted to vote for the remix video, which is so completely bizarre it's hilarious (you'd think it was a fan-made one, with the random Lego parody at the end!), but the original has got to be my favourite. Especially the bit with Bono nodding in approval at Edge's dodgy hand jive, and of course the dance finale!  I can't believe I thought this video was weird and boring when I saw it in 1997 (as a non-U2 fan). How did I not see how funny it is?!

I was intending to go with Discothèque, but got distracted by the "Oooooo, sparkly!" and went with SATS.

Discotheque all the way. Man, I just could not resist that vid, what with the sparklies and Edge's mirrorball guitar and the dubious pelvic thrusts at the end...*laughs*

BOOM-CHA!

What about the dubious pelvic thrusts all the way through? Bono seems unable to stop humping the viewer's face camera.

Which is the only reason I did NOT vote for it.

I love Bono, but come on now.

My vote is for Last Night on Earth because it was filmed a couple hours from my house - but my next choice would be Discotheque. BOOMCHA!

The Last Night on Earth video may be my favourite U2 video period. It took me so many viewings to get a sense of what the hell was going on in it, and then shortly thereafter, I found out just why I was so confused... the DVD version is missing the B-movie captions that explain the 'plot' of the video. It's just so random and ultra-cool. I wish I could ride around Kansas City in an old car with U2 *sigh* Plus the video inspired the longest and most awesomest story I ever wrote =)

I'm also a fan of both Staring at the Sun videos even though I don't like the song much, just because of the pretty. Bono's hair was especially nice in the early Pop days, and there's just so much gorgeousness in both videos.

And of course Discotheque has the beautiful slash and very very gay dancing <3

Yeah, I was watching the captions version yesterday - I hadn't seen it before as I didn't know it existed until recently!

this was hard, because Discothèque is SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME, but I for some inexplicable reason (maybe I watch too many weird horror movies) adore Last Night On Earth, even though I have NO IDEA WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!

What endeared me to Discothèque forever was director Stephane Sednaoui's commentary in the "Best of" DVD. His description of everybody's reaction to the BOOM-CHA choreography is hilarious (and his delicious French accent is the cherry on top).

It's impressive to note that the video was shot in a 24-hour day. He gave the go-go dancer to Larry to get him "more excited" because Larry's all "whatever" so the choreography was "all wrong all the time."

Edge is "superpro"! (And later he fangirls him some more: "Edge is so cool!"

And Adam "is in another world so he's following but doing his own version."

"Larry is like 'No way, I don't give a shit, I'm going to show people that I don't want to do it. I am not participating. I am not approving this.'"

Hee!

My least favorite round. I think these vids arn't there best... Still, Discotheque IS one of their funniest. And it was their biggest hit of that era... It's also pretty boisterousness... THAT, I like about it ;)
