I'm currently feelin: contemplative contemplative

As people have already noted, the general sale today was a bit of a disaster. I must have been one of the first people with access because I had an approximately 30-second wait the first time I hit search. But the GAs were already gone and every consequent search kept me waiting at least 10 minutes. From the rumblings over on Zootopia, it seems entirely possible that there weren’t any (or many) GA tickets available in the general sale after all. Sucks, but I guess that’s how it goes.

So dear U2 fans, please help me with strategy, if you will. I’m sure there are several people out there trying to figure out how best to get the tickets they want, so this might be generally helpful. Which of the following options do you think is best?

1. Try again for GA tickets at the general sale for the second NY show
Pros: Reasonably priced tickets if you can get them
Cons: Can you get them?

2. Get another U2.com subscription and so receive another pre-sale code
Pros: Better chances since most people will be in the Boots category; $50 is likely going to be less money than whatever one pays to scalpers
Cons: Another $50 to the fan club for similar iffy chances

3. Give in to the many unfairnesses of the system and just pay $150 for a ticket on eBay.
Pros: Easy
Cons: Expensive; participation in a completely ridiculous re-selling process

4. Wait it out and hope that tickets get cheaper/more easily available closer to the date of the show.
Pros: Cheaper, less participation in morally bankrupt scalping system
Cons: Potential for great failure; unnecessary stress in the interim

Thoughts? :)

For long time subscribers, you do pay $32 to resub. And you get a nifty cd as well as a near guarantee to get tickets to the shows. Its worth it to me.

But it depends on your cash flow too. I know I won't be able to see as many shows as I did for the last couple of tours but thats ok.

I'd say get another U2.com subscription.

I tried this morning, to get GA's for Chicago for my friend and it was IMPOSSIBLE. I say avoid the public sale at all costs.

I gave in to a ticket broker for 1 show last tour. Expensive? yes. Worth it? YES! So worst case scenario...give in to the unfairness.

But I highly recommend the membership.

Yeah, I went ahead and got one. Am obviously in Boots and there's a pretty good chance that the GAs will be gone by the time our pre-sale rolls around, but it seems worth the risk.

Boots people seem to be having more GA luck with second shows, so if I were in your position, I might get another subscription. Only you can weigh whether it's worth it, though. If you use all 4 of your tickets, it's not that much of a mark up per ticket.

I have a Boots code and I'm sure it's going to be useless for LA and Vegas, but I'm hopeful that enough people will blow their presale codes early, and I'll be able to get presale GA for LA2 (assuming there is an LA2).

But if I were you, I would NOT go ahead and pay a scalper for a GA right now. Wait it out and see what happens. Keep checking TM for drops, and look around for trades with fans. Worst case scenario: you pay a scalper later on. I've certainly never had to pay $150 for a GA ticket before, and most of the time I've struck out with TM in both presales and general sales.

I got another subscription and ended up with 4 GAs to the second NY show. Absolutely worth it. :)

You all make me feel like I'm a second hand fan!

I have no desire to get GA tix...I want a seat... and I'm lucky I can afford to go to one show....

I spent my entire youth in the GA section at shows, being shoved and smushed. Now that I'm a granny, I am so happy that I can afford to pay extra for a seat with a good view.

That's how I feel. I did my time in the GA trenches, now I want to sit back and not be squished uncomfortably (and yeah, like everyone else I *DO* love these guys more than words can say)....

I can't afford a subscription, and it'll be a miracle if we can afford tickets when they go on sale here. I feel like a second-rate fan because odds are the hubby and I will end up on eBay just like we did for Vertigo.

I'm just a nervous wreck. I have to wait until Wednesday at 6:00 to try and get tix. On the Vertigo tour, I bought seat via the public sale and had no problem. Yeah we were *behind* the stage, but they were still good seats (closer to the stage than a lot of the other seats in the arena), and the guys did acknowledge all of us who were sitting there several times during the show.

I vote for option 1, but it probably depends how many you want. Option 2 is not bad for a second show. The other two options seem dodgier.

Have you checked the U2.com boards for folks who have extra tickets?

The general sale for NY1 sort of scared me off so I went with option 2, which went off without a hitch. Thanks for the input!

There are other secondary sellers than just ebay, don't forget. There's a blog piece here about the ticket sales and it mentions some other options. But I'd say at this point, don't panic. It sounds like a lot of people have bought up big on tickets that they may or may not be able to sell for the massive prices they're asking. Going on past experience, 'sold out' isn't anything of the sort and more tickets will become available over time.

Yep...it's pretty much an epic fail all around.

I'm probably going to have to go the ebay route, and I'm not fucking happy about it. But after the Vertigo fiasco, I also wasn't about to pay $50 for an outsourced fan club thing again (Why do they want so much for a membership who's primary purpose is to facilitate you simply spending more money?).

Meh.

What happened with Vertigo? I keep hearing rumblings about the sales being a disaster but I wasn't involved so don't really understand what happened.

Am sure you'll end up with decent tickets. General consensus seems to be that all the scalpers are being seriously optimistic right now.

I would recommend waiting it out.  Tickets on eBay are scarily easy to come by in the week or so before the show and sometimes you can get incredibly lucky.  For the Vertigo tour, I managed to snag four $95 (I believe that was the price) tickets for under $150.  They weren't all located together, but I didn't mind much as I gave away two of them to friends.

In fact, I enjoyed the show so much that my friend and I decided to go back the next night and take our luck with the scalpers.  We went straight to the arena right after work and didn't arrive until after the opening band did their thing, so the scalpers were more than willing to take less than face-value for the tickets.

Did you get 4 for a total of $150 or for under $150 each? Because if it's the former, then that's seriously amazing.

According to Paypal, my grand total was $126.50 for four tickets AND overnight shipping.  The last-minute thing was a bit nerve-wracking as it meant I didn't receive tickets until the day before the concert but, at that price, it was definitely worth it.
