Streets going political? Again? @ 06:52 pm

t4_flirt:
I'm currently feelin: bitchy bitchy

According to a report on u2gigs.com, Streets is reportedly being used as a platform for Bono and his political activism. Again.
As if the masks for "Walk On" weren't enough...

All I gotta say is that they had better do the red screen and blinding white light. *fumes silently*

The Walk On thing is ridiculous, but I don't get the outrage or surprise over a speech from Bishop Tutu. Granted, I haven't seen it and won't for about a month, but I'd guess it'd be more universal than political.

And if it's a U2 show, it's not 'a platform for Bono and his political activism'. All the guys would have agreed to it, whereas they might not agree with all of his normal extracurriculars.

I expect Bono to be Bono. So during the show we went to last tour, I just rolled my eyes & waited. *shrug*

Errr...Streets is a political song, by a political band. Why is this suddenly a matter of contention?

I haven't been keeping up with LJ for the last few weeks (mainly because a History thesis, running U2gigs, and preparing to travel to see the band in Europe are collectively conspiring to kill my free time), so I've no idea how people on this community feel about spoilers this time around, but I'd just like to point out that the linked article, as with anything on the U2gigs homepage, is spoiler central in a big way.

As for my own personal feelings, I'd like to actually see a decent quality clip of how this Bishop Tutu speech is integraed with Streets (or, you know, see it for myself in a couple of weeks) before passing judgement. That said, at the moment, this just makes me think of the taped Human Rights segment on the Vertigo Tour, i.e. unoriginal vibes.

Still, not half as bad as the fucking tacky Walk On masks.

Umm...did anyone else get really excited when they mentioned Larry playing Electrical Storm on a glockenspiel? O_o

I'm excited about Electrical Storm period! Unfortunately I probably won't get to hear it in person, since it's looking like I'm going to have to sell my Boston tickets :(

If you don't like it, don't go. It's that simple. I'm sure there's someone who'd be glad to buy your ticket(s). At this point in U2's career, given how much the entire band (and not just Bono) values social justice, it's not like something like this is completely unexpected. Streets seems like the right song for it, too.

Actually, I think it's awesome. To say nothing of the potential set additions. :)

A) What's wrong with Bono's activism? Are there U2 fans who think the causes he supports are bad things? I may not always agree with his approach (ie. those bloody awful masks), but I certainly agree with his stance (ie. poverty = bad, third world debt = bad, political oppression = bad).

B) It's a U2 concert FFS. Did you honestly honestly expect there would be no activism? I'd ask if you were new only I know you're not.
