Hello Hello!!

August 8th, 2002

Try not to shoot me all at once, but... @ 08:50 am

ex_material505:
I'm currently feelin: curious curious
I'm currently hearin: Pink Floyd - Time

...Don't tell me I'm the only person who's noticed striking similarities between the end of Walk On and the Pink Floyd song Eclipse.

All that you fashion
All that you make
All that you build
All that you break
All that you measure
All that you feel
All this you can;t leave behind
All that you reason - it's only time
All that I'm feeling on my mind
All that you sense,
All that you scheme,
All you dress-up,
And all that you see,
All you create,
All that you wreck,
All that you hate
----------------

All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All that you feel
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All that you save
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy
beg, borrow or steal
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say
All that you eat
everyone you meet
All that you slight
everyone you fight
All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
Yes, quite possibly it's not deliberate but when I first listened to Eclipse it jumped out at me as sounding oddly familiar (the lyrics, not the tune). Oh, and the line the sun is eclipsed by the moon...anyone reminded of The Fly there?

Anyone got it on record whether or not any of the members are Pink Floyd fans?

I noticed that too, while listening to Dark Side Of The Moon really late at night (how college student am I?)... I heard that and went "dude."

I would think that the boys would be Floyd fans, just because Pink Floyd would have been putting music out around the time U2 were starting out and being influenced. Plus it's damn good music. ^_^

I noticed this the first time I heard Walk On! I tried to post about it here previously, but for some reason my post didn't go through! I think there is an intentional parallel. But also, if you look at the tone of the songs, and the albums you find them on, there is a stark contrast. Pink Floyd's point (I think) is that none of these things matter, because in the end we're all mortal, and it's all pointless. The tone is very pessimistic. Conversely, U2's point is that these are all things that you have to leave behind so you can find what is truly important. It's tone is very uplifting.

Yeah, i'm a hardcore Pink Floyd fan myself, but they don't top U2 in my book. But yes, the lyrical setup is roughly identical...but as pointed out by u2biscuit, the words have fundamentally different perspectives. Eclipse's expression (to my perspective, of course) that everything is ultimately "overshadowed" by something else, so we shouldn't put too much faith in even the fullest of matter, whereas Walk On reminds us that Love is all that matters in the end. Both sets of lyrics try to give us a very large and full view, both to bring down preconcieved notions...but Eclipse tells us to drop all of this, whereas Walk On tells us that there is something left in the end.
