How does he do it? @ 07:10 am

I'm currently feelin: content content

Time and time again, I'm struck by the ... artistry ... of Bono's lyrics. He writes using magic as his ink.

Still shaking, still in pain
You put me back together again
I was cold and you clothed me, honey
I was down and you lifted me, honey
...
Do you feel in me
Anything redeeming,
Any worthwhile feeling
Is love like a tightrope
Hanging from my ceiling
...
Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
...
I remember when we could sleep on stones
But now we lie together in whispers and moans
...
They're reading names out over the radio
All the folks the rest of us won't get to know
Sean and Julia - Gareth, Ann and Breda
Their lives are bigger than any big idea
...
And a woman needs a man
Like a fish needs a bicycle
...
When I was all messed up
And I heard opera in my head
Your love was a lightbulb
Hangin' over my bed
...
I was broken, bent out of shape
I was naked in the clothes you made

I think I can rest my case.
Ah, one could drown in this sort of music.

I know what you mean... ever so often a lyric will reach out and call to you in a way you never saw it. Right now, I've been infatuated by the lyrics of "If You Wear That Velvet Dress".

Although, the famous "and a woman needs a man, like a fish needs a bicycle" has been one of those cliche sayings before "Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World" song was written. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've seen it printed elsewhere, whether in books or magazines, *before* the release of Achtung Baby.

Here's the origin, taken from a "Phrase Finder" website (so unfortunately, Bono can't take credit!)

Origin

Often attributed to Gloria Steinem. Other claims for origination point to Flo (Florynce) Kennedy or to an anonymous author who painted the slogan on a wall at University of Wisconsin in 1969.

Gloria Steiner had this to say in a letter she wrote to Time magazine in autumn 2000:

"In your note on my new and happy marital partnership with David Bale, you credit me with the witticism 'A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.' In fact, Irina Dunn, a distinguished Australian educator, journalist and politician, coined the phrase back in 1970 when she was a student at the University of Sydney."

Ultraviolet is my favourite song off of Achtung Baby, and my second most favourite U2 song after Bad. Then of course, I recently read in an old article (that I somehow missed), that "If You Wear That Velvet Dress" is pretty much a continuation of Ultraviolet...

... and it makes perfect sense now. And I also find it ironic how both songs are my favourite off their album (ie: Achtung Baby, and Pop).

Wow, that does make a lot of sense...

How i love the song Ultraviolet - I just wish it were longer!
Yes, I agree that If You Wear... is amazing as well.
Although I couldn't say that it's my favorite off Pop - that's currently my favorite album (ask me tomorrow, I may have changed my mind, lol), and I just can't seem to pick one favorite song off of it.

In reference to "Peace on Earth".. Bono wrote a letter to the mother of Ann from Omagh telling them that he used her daughter's name in a song in memory of the bombing. (He may have asked if it was okay if he used it, actually, I forget which.)
