Wake up, wake up dead fans!

Do you enjoy the music of U2? Are you interested in discussing it with other fans?
If the answer is no, I'm afraid you appear to have joined the wrong community.
If the answer is yes, perhaps you would like to continue reading.

What is Song Of The Day? Who's in charge of it?

Song Of The Day was first launched on 21st March 2005. The feature was invented by hue126 who introduced it as follows...

"I thought I'd test the temperature of each fan in the community by starting something interesting:
Every day, starting with tonight, I'm gonna pick a random song from the U2 canon and ask for anyone's opinion, good or bad, in the community on that particular song.
I know it's gonna be a little slanted towards the positive side of things, but even U2 has its warts and songs that fans aren't really crazy about. It's the nature of anything subjective, whether it be artists or music or movies. Give it a shot!

This daily discussion of the songs proved extremely popular, and hue126 carried on picking tracks for the next six weeks before deciding to let someone else take over. djmlm41 then filled in for a couple of weeks but was unable to continue.

The feature was soon missed, and at the start of June zoostation stepped in to revive it. During her four month reign she also reinvented it, with more informative posts that included song lyrics and the story behind the track (in contrast to earlier posts which had simply given a brief opinion). Song Of The Day now became a team effort, with zoostation and claudiathefish splitting the week between them. When the latter became unavailable due to Hurricane Katrina, stay_please (formerly onebadkite) volunteered to replace her, providing even more detailed posts about the background to each song.

zoostation retired from SOTD in September, recruiting volare and sirensong984 to fill the vacancy. The posting team was then further expanded in January 2006 when inklingfair, bonoffee and sapphires13 all expressed an interest in participating. This meant there were now six regular posters - a different one for nearly every day of the week!

In April that year there was a heated debate about whether it was time to scrap Song Of The Day, which unfortunately prompted two of the posters to quit, despite the feature being deemed popular enough to continue. Later that month canadanne decided to join the posting team, after more than a year of dedicated commenting! There was however an evident loss of morale within the team, and SOTD became more of a weekly feature for a year or so. A handful of guest posters such as rockingthemike, xxpoptart and needleandspoon have contributed one-off reviews in my absence.

SOTD eventually went AWOL in September 2007 due to other projects eating up my time, and since then it has only popped up every few months, whenever one of us feels an urge to post. The community (and LJ as a whole) is a lot quieter these days, but the occasional song posts still seem to be appreciated and it would be great if this feature could be resurrected - if not regularly then at least more frequently!

What can Song Of The Day include?

There is no strict format and each poster can bring their own style and ideas. Over the years, Song Of The Day has included such features as...
  • zoostation's daily award (complete with graphic) for the band member who impressed her the most on the chosen song.
  • Rare Song Tuesday (or Wednesday) where Pla would choose a lesser known demo or B-side, providing an MP3 download for anyone who hadn't heard it.
  • stay_please's special theme weeks, such as "Zooropa Week", "Bono Takes A Sick Day" and "Didn't Make The Cut".
  • volare's Flashback Friday / Wayback Weekend, specialising in the very early demos.
Some SOTDs have focused on a particular live performance, complete with screencaps of key moments. We've also covered a variety of material including remixes, side projects and unreleased outtakes. The possibilities are almost endless!

How do I join in?

Song Of The Day is an opportunity to explain what each song means to you personally, and what you like or don't like about it. While the poster aims to provide some background info, and perhaps introduce fans to a song they weren't familiar with, the real essence of SOTD has always been the comments posted in response. The more replies the better! Whether you love or hate the chosen track, agree or disagree with what's been written, we want to hear your opinion. Long or short, all comments are welcome!

If you'd like to write a Song Of The Day post yourself, please go right ahead - no regular commitment is required, just a fresh perspective! There are still many songs we haven't covered (not least of which is the entire NLOTH album), but do feel free to repeat previous selections if you have something more to add.

Where is the SOTD archive?

The full alphabetical list can be found here (there's a permanent link on the left-hand side of the community).

You can also go here to browse by album (this includes any remixes and live versions of the tracks).
