I'd recommend standing right by the ring. Unless you want to be there the night before or in the wee hours of the morning, I don't think you're guaranteed a spot close enough to the stage (in the pit) for it to be worth it. I must've been in the queue at 2 or 3-ish (I was no. 631 in line) and I was in the first row by the ring. I had an AMAZING view, wasn't too close to the stage that it strained my neck, I could see the screen, and Bono held the mic out to me and the girl standing by me when he sang I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight :D (Made. my. life.)

When I got there, they wrote 631 on my arm and gave me a bracelet (to the first 700 people). You can get there early, get your bracelet and then come back after a few hours. As long as the line hasn't started moving in and there's someone there to hold your place (you could take turns), your spot will be safe.

Atleast it won't be cold when you wait outside :)
