Last tour I did outside rail, inside the pit on the rail, and a show back at the soundboard. It varies city to city, but if you want a place on the inner rail, you're going to have to be there EARLY. Since stadiums had problems with people lining up, for almost every show we headed down the night before to find people keeping a list with names and numbers. We would put our names down and then be back by 4 or 5 am to wait the rest of the day. If you bring a cheap sleeping bag and a book, or if you're going with friends, it's not nearly as bad as it sounds.

For outer rail, we were still there that early, but I heard of people getting spots who had come later in the day. A few rows back in either section, you can pretty much get there whenever.

I don't know if you're doing multiple shows, but my personal recommendation is doing outer rail. I found that it was easily the best view and sound and you really got a 'feel' for the whole production. Inner rail is fine, but if you want to go that route, make sure you're toward the center. The side looks fine at first, but when the show starts you won't be able to see much of anything because of how the stage curves.

Good luck!
