Hello Hello!!

May 9th, 2013

It was 20 years ago today... @ 03:54 pm

canadanne:
Tonight marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the Zooropa tour - the U2 era that made me a fan and will always remain my favourite. :) Just wish I could have been there! Slightly terrifying to realise that when I first got into the band, the tour was only 6 years ago, which means I've been on this train for 14 years now... where has all that time gone?!

Sadly it wouldn't let me upload Desire to my DM account, but here is the encore speech and Ultra Violet from the opening night...

Amazing times. So, so envious of anyone who got to see this tour in person!

Not that I mean this in a braggy way, but I did get to see this tour in person and it still stands in my memory as one of best shows of theirs I've ever gotten to see. It really was every bit as amazing as the videos make it seem.

To take the sting of the bragginess away, I'll relate a little anecdote...

I had been a fan since October (I'm assuming there aren't a lot of U2 fans who would claim October as the album that started their love, LOL) so when The Joshua Tree came out and the phenomenon kept growing and growing I thought, "Oh crap, now EVERYONE'S going to know about this band and I'll never be able to get good concert tickets again." My husband was one of those people who jumped on board during this time, but he didn't know much beyond this one and Rattle and Hum so had no idea that they liked to switch it up with sound and style, etc.

Achtung Baby came out right around the time we started living together and I was in love with it while he avoided listening to it for months. He finally did listen to it when I wasn't home one day - I came home and he couldn't wait to tell me, "I will never listen to U2 again. This is one of the worst things I've ever heard. I can't believe this is the same band that did The Joshua Tree." We had to agree to disagree on it because there was no way he could talk me out of loving it.

Awhile later the tour tickets came on sale and he knew not going wasn't a possibility, so he reluctantly agreed to go even though we had to travel out of town for it. About a month before the concert he decided he'd better listen to it again so as not to be completely lost during the show. The lightbulb went on - he "got it" that time and has loved it ever since.

Of course this means I get to remind him of this story whenever we have a disagreement over some piece of art or music or whatever, so in the end, it was totally worth those months of having to listen to it in secret because he couldn't stand it.

I sooooo need a time machine! You are so lucky!

Hehe, I *still* get nervous about their ever-growing fanbase and how much harder it becomes to get tickets and a decent spot, so I can imagine how worrying that must have been for fans who discovered them while they were still relatively unknown!

I'm always amazed to hear of people who *disliked* AB when they first heard it, rather than being blown away by it. I'm glad your husband had a change of heart! The same thing happened for me with Zooropa, it just made sense one day and I couldn't understand why I hadn't always loved it.

I was hoping some people would share their ZooTV stories, so thank you. :D

My sister went, and I am so jealous! Sadly, I was too young at the time to be allowed to go to a concert... Really wish I could go back in time, I am still convinced that was the best tour they ever did! (and I've been to following concerts that I loved... I guess the best one is always the one we didn't manage to go to!)

Without a doubt it was the best! (Even though some fans on certain forums insist I'm not allowed to hold that opinion if I didn't see the tour in person. *eyeroll*)

Well, seeing it on DVD was enough to convince me it was the best tour ever!
