She's the wave / She'll turn the tide... @ 01:57 pm

kjackson:
I'm currently feelin: curious curious
I'm currently hearin: U2 // Mysterious Ways (Best of 1990-2000 version)

I remember some time ago reading about how the Best of 1990-2000 version of "Mysterious Ways" was going to be ever-so-slightly different and, with it now being streamed over at U2.com, it seems to now be confirmed.

It's only a minor little thing, but U2wanderer.org picked it up in their documentation of this Best of's "Mysterious Ways" lyrics: Right before the second chorus, whereas the Achtung Baby version went "She's the wave / She'll turn the tide / She sees the man inside the child, yeah," the Best of 1990-2000 version goes "She's the wave / She'll turn the tide / And no questions, she knows why."

Nothing big, I guess... but do you see any significance to the altered verse?

BTW, that was a great find in your last post, Hapavox!

I don't understand why U2 insist on sticking crappy lyrics into songs when they release different versions of them!  I was listening to the Underdog Mix of Stay on Melon yesterday, and it sounds so rubbish with Bono's obviously improvised lyrics instead of the usual chorus. And now they are doing it with Mysterious Ways too.... that new lyric seems pretty meaningless to me, so why not use the album version with the much more poetic line?  I don't mind them using different lyrics on different mixes (e.g. "She loves you, you don't know why" sounds equally as good as "She's the wave, she turn the tide"), but if the new lyric is stupid, I don't see the point of including it....

I have no clue why B. insists on changing the lyrics to perfectly good songs.

In this case it might be to tie in to the 'let her talk about the things you can't explain line', to carry that thought further.

It actually kind of depends on how he sings it. I haven't streamed the new version, but if the actual lyric change was to 'no questions/she knows why' it might make a little more sense.

I kind of like all the different versions. All of them add a different twist. But then again, I seem to be one of those weird fans that likes just about everything and anything they do, so maybe I just don't have a clue.

If anything, I would've added Edge absolutely spectacular solo at the end (listening to live versions of the song gives me the chills... I love it!) But, still, "Mysterious Ways" is a fairly popular song (everyone who listened to radio in the 90s, not just U2 fans, surely know it), so I'm a little surprised they changed any little detail about the song.

But, then again, this is the revisionist Best of collection :-)
