I have vague memories of the first one. It was chaos, since this was an unpublicised gig. Not a real concert with all the usual trappings of a stadium show. Thousands of people littered the Plaza, and the surrounding streets. The cool thing about that day was they were filiming it, and we all knew it was going to get used somehow. A clip of All Along The Watchtower was used in the film, and on the album RATTLE AND HUM.
Ah, the opening of the red lights four days later in Oakland. Red lights are THE signal for Where The Streets Have No Name. It always has been, and hopefully always will be. My boss at the time, Lisa, is the one who took me. We had such a great time. It was two weeks before my 18th birthday, so that was my gift. It was probably the best birthday present I have ever had in my life. I hazily recall Gloria and Out Of Control being favorites, as well as THE JOSHUA TREE album tracks. Even by November of 1987, I was already so sick of With Or Without You, and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For that I really didn't care to hear them that night. I still feel the same way 14 years later. I will never tire of Bullet The Blue Sky, or Where The Streets Have No Name. I remember thinking Help by the Beatles was horrible. Stand By Me was a sappy moment I could have done without. Finishing strong with 40 was such a high. It was nice to see they performed it on Saturday night in Ontario. I hope they do it again when they are here next month.
