Cut songs from Boston...?? @ 04:22 pm

virginblue:
I'm currently feelin: why?
I'm currently hearin: In A Little While - U2

So...having only obtained my own copy of the Boston DVD this week...I'm doing lots of "research" about it...to satisfy my curious needs. I'm sure it's all stuff you peoples did ages ago.

Anyway...I came across www.u2tours.com which has a set list from (almost) every U2 gig ever. I'm curious as to why there have been songs cut from the Boston DVD.

I know the DVD is a mixture of 3 shows (June 5th, 6th, and 9th...right?) but it's mostly of the 6th...which had this set list:

Elevation, Beautiful Day, Until the End of the World, Mysterious Ways / Sexual Healing, In My Life / Stuck In a Moment, Kite, Gone, New York, I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday / Get Up Stand Up, In A Little While, Desire / Gloria, People Get Ready, Bad, Where the Streets Have No Name, Pride, Bullet the Blue Sky, With or Without You, The Fly, One / Wake Up Dead Man, Walk On.

And the DVD list is: Elevation, Beautiful Day, Until the End of the World, Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Kite, Gone, New York, I Will Follow, Sunday Bloody Sunday, In a Little While, Desire, Stay (June 5th), Bad, Where the Streets Have No Name, Bullet the Blue Sky, With or Without You, The Fly, Wake Up Dead Man, Walk On.

So, my question is, does anyone know why "Pride", "Mysterious Ways / Sexual Healing" and "One" (which were performed at all Boston shows) were cut from the DVD? Surely it wasn't a space thing...not on DVD...??? I feel like I'm missing out...unless there's a good reason. Or maybe we'll never know.

Actually, the show was a mixture of just June 5th and 6th. And no one really knows why they were cut. I barely watch that tape/DVD because any U2 show without One seems pointless to me.

lol...that's a bit harsh! I don't mind missing out on One...but I do with Pride and Mysterious Ways! I'm not gonna ditch watching it just cause of that though.

Sorry to bug you ("am I bugging you? play the blues, Edge!")...but One is pretty overrated. Even Bono has admitted to not really knowing what the song is about! :P

One isn't my favorite song, but it's always one of the best moments of any U2 concert because it sounds so great live. I might have exaggerated a bit. My point was simply that the Elevation DVD doesn't feel like a whole show. It seems like they didn't even make an attempt to make it look cohesive. They places where they've skipped songs are so obvious. I just feel cheated watching it.

And I know that neither PopMart in Mexico City or ZOO TV in Sydney were full start-finish shows, but at least those videos had the appearance of a complete show.

Oh? I didn't realise that about Zoo and Pop...I thought they were full (at least according to the set lists at www.u2tours.com they are the same as the videos). What got cut from those shows?

That's why I was a bit sour on Boston being cut so much. Yeah...I feel a bit cheated to...being one who couldn't go to any of the shows.

Yeah, that would especially suck!

Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World was cut from Live in Sydney, I think because the woman Bono pulled on stage for that song didn't sign a release (there's debate on that point), and Popmart was a mixture of two nights in Mexico City, though it covers all the songs.

See though, you couldn't tell with those two shows. With Elevation, it's so obvious (like when they come back on stage after The Fly and then, one camera cut later, the video of the bull running that accompanied One is up behind them from nowhere!).

Also: Keep an eye out during Gone and the few songs before... they use the same damn shot of Adam about four times. It's a shot from behind, and you can really tell during Gone because it's a shot in regular white light and Gone has all those colored lights. It's really bad editing.

Of course I only notice this because my dad and stepmother are both in tv.... ::is a geek::

I have no idea why the songs were actually cut, especially One and Mysterious Ways.

But a guess for Pride being taken out was Bono's voice being so weak in that show. I don't have Boston boots, but it seems strange to think he could have held the chorus well, so it was cut.

*shrugs*

Can't we just get one full concert video out of them?

*wanders off to watch the Zoo*

Songs Cut?

(Link)

It became...a space thing. According to an interview done with Peter "Willie" Williams(show set designer) and Hamish Hamilton(director of the project) in a published article around the time of the video release, U2 Elevation: Live in Boston had songs edited or 'cut' because they didn't 'fit' on the DVD...partly because the band opted for Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound which took up a great amount of space on the disc(s).

I think that's the 'smart ass' answer but my hunch is that the group weren't pleased with the live footage of "Pride," "Mysterious Ways," and "One" when it came down to the final cut of the release.

Re: Songs Cut?

Yeah...I'm with the 2nd option...that they were cut due to "poor performance"...which I think is a poor excuse...cause I don't believe U2 can really put in a poor performance! Bono's voice is hardly peak on any of the songs on the Boston DVD...but that doesn't bother me that much...cause it's about the experience!

I can not agree with the "space" argument at all. I know DVDs...and if they can fit 150min movies on a disc with DD5.1 sound...then they can fit more than a 90min concert on one disc! It surely would have been easy enough to fit the "making of the filming of..." feature on the 2nd disc.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh well. Too late now. I've had my whinge. I'll just be happy to finally have the DVD now! :)
