"In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You, you were acting like it was
The end of the world" ~Until the End of the World

"So Cruel" seems to be about breaking up.

And there's "Is That All?"

"I disappeared in you ... you disappeared from me
I gave you everything you ever wanted, it wasn't what you wanted ..."

That's practically my favorite lyric from So Cruel

"You say you want diamonds in a ring of gold...when all I want is you"

I always thought that was a bittersweet song...like the girl wanted diamonds and broke up with the guy coz he couldn't/wouldn't give them, and all he ever wanted was to be with her....*sigh*

I always think of "Please" as a pretty resentful break up song even though it has nothing to do with it.

Well, there's the fairly obvious one, though only applicable in certain circumstances:

I have climbed highest mountain
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you

I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
- "I.S.H.F.W.I.L.F."

Or...

Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness
- "Love is Blindness"

Or...

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
- "Bad"

Really, most of "Bad" seems largely applicable.

Believe it or not, Bad is actually all about Heroine. I was shocked when someone first pointed this out to me, but someone the band knew had a problem with it, and Bono wrote those lyrics.

I am aware of that, but you know most songs really can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the situation.

Oh, I believe it. Come to think of it, isn't Trip Through Your Wires also about heroin? I thought I heard that somewhere.

"I Still Haven't Found.." can, of course, be interpreted in many ways but I believe Bono wrote it about religion/God/spirituality instead of what many people think it's about: a lost love.

But it works well both ways, which is a beautiful thing about U2.

~nods~ I think a lot of the lyrics for their songs can be interpreted in many ways. I really need to start finding my own meanings in them.

I always saw this as the speaker illustrated how the woman who is the focus of Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World feels about relationships in general. The speaker in the song is trying to convince her that she needs a relationship with him. I saw it more of a criticism of that kind of thinking than a validation of it.

Then again, I've had problems with "world saving" women in the past, so maybe it's just me. And like someone else said, you can interpret these songs any way you want :)

"So Cruel" from Achtung Baby would have to be THE U2 break-up song. Then there's "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"...and in a weird way "With Or Without You"...which is probably more for the comfort zone.

However, my ultimate song for a break-up is "Last Goodbye" by Jeff Buckley.

Be careful; if you use lyrics, don't remember the lyrics afterwards as "the break-up lyrics."

I used the following, but only because it fit perfectly (sadly):

...I can't be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.

again from achtung baby...

"There is a silence that comes to a house
Where no one can sleep
I guess it's the price of love
I know it's not cheap"

Or one that struck me pretty hard during a break-up...

"You're taking steps that make you feel dizzy
Then you get to like the way it feels
You hurt yourself you hurt your lover
Then you discover
What you thought was freedom is just greed"

"One" seems such a sad song to me, it would be a break-up song for me.

"The Sound Of Breaking Up" by Paul Mac is another one, in a way it's not as sad though.

You wanted to get somewhere so badly
You had to lose yourself along the way
You changed your name
Well that's okay
It's necessary
What you leave behind you don't miss anyway.

In fact, Gone would be my song of choice in this instance - particularly the version on the most recent "best of" album.
