Random U2-ness @ 05:48 pm

ex_satellite451:
I'm currently feelin: cheerful cheerful
I'm currently hearin: Rush - Big Audio Dynamite

1) Being the dork that I am, I am excited to have grown up in a place that U2 sung about ie Van Diemens Land, even if its Tasmania now...

2) What was the first U2 album/single you bought? I didn't actually buy it, but I fell in love with U2 from Rattle and Hum, which my Dad bought when it first came out. It's still one of my favourites really.

3) I could be WAY wrong about this, but I could have sworn that U2 did the entire soundtrack for a movie....Million Dollar Hotel? Is that right? And if it is, what's the soundtrack like?

Achtung Baby. I received it as a gift after requesting it... in early 1993. Immediately afterwards I started to buy the entire discography - no joke.

And to answer your question, U2 did create the music for the Million Dollar Hotel. The entire movie was pretty much Bono's idea. If you've heard the song "The Ground Beneath Her Feet", you've heard a song from that soundtrack.

There are some great songs on that soundtrack, but it's mostly mellow, moody songs...

First U2 album? ATYCLB about a year ago....immediately afterward I bought all of their studio albums. I can't believe it took 18 years of my life to realize how amazing they are.

Didn't U2 do something for Passengers? Was that a soundtrack? I'm a little shady about this...

Passengers was the name of the group... U2 + Brian Eno. They didn't want to call it "U2" because they figured it would alienate fans. So they kept it as a side project under the title "Passengers", even though it was mainly U2.

Each song off of Passengers was used for a soundtrack of a movie... I believe. It's a collection of songs they recorded that were eventually used for soundtracks. Most of the songs are instrumental... with exception to the occasional one, like Miss Sarajevo, or Your Blue Room.

some of the "movies" the songs off passengers were written for were released, and some of them weren't. they wrote all the songs and then they had to find homes for them. i think some of the homes never reached the finish line.

The Joshua Tree, when I was eleven years old. Being a desert rat, I felt that the album really spoke to me at the time - I actually refer to it as 'the desert disc'.

Then I bought Achtung when I was twelve, and had my mind blown. It took me nearly a year and a half to collect every album, then all the singles and rarities and t-shirts I could find ...

PopMart came to Sun Devil Stadium in 1997, and the rest is history ;-)

on my 12th birthday (1993) my grandmother gave me $100 and i used $40 of it to buy four $9.99 u2 cds at walmart. for some reason vh1 had played AIWIY over and over on tv that summer (i had no idea achtung baby was even on the radar, honestly) and i found out my cousin had the joshua tree and rattle & hum. i borrowed those two cds from him and then went out and purchased boy, war, unforgetable fire, and under a blood red sky all in one fell swoop on my birthday. i figured i'd trace the discography in order. all this was based on the strength of realizing AIWIY, WOWY, (and this song called MW that was sometimes on the radio) were by the same band and that their name was U2.

as they say, the rest is history... :-)

2) I feel in love with The Best of 1980-1990. I get goosebumps when I listen to it. I just can't get enough of With or Without You, ISHFWILF, Bad, Where the Streets Have No Name, All I Want Is You, October.... Ahh yes, bliss. It's like Heaven on a CD.

My first U2 CD was the Best Of 1980-1990 & B-Sides, which I bought in the summer of 1999 after I just had a feeling that I should. I quite liked it, though it didn't knock me senseless at first. I did want to buy another U2 album, though (having seen a list of interesting song titles in a U2 discography!), so I bought Achtung Baby. I immediately thought "WHOA, this is the best album I've ever heard", and was hopelessly devoted from that moment on.

The Million Dollar Hotel movie was actually written by Bono (he'd been working on it for YEARS - it gets a mention towards the end of U2 At The End Of The World, the book about the ZooTV era). So it was kind of natural that Bono/U2 should take care of the soundtrack as well. The soundtrack's really good, to answer your question - definitely worth buying!  It's quite jazzy/moody on the whole. My favourite tracks are Never Let Me Go, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Stateless, Dancin' Shoes, Satellite Of Love (Danny Saber Remix) and Falling At Your Feet.

well U2 didn't exactly do the whole soundtrack for Million Dollar HOtel. There are only 2 official U2 songs on it. but the other songs DO have either bono, or the others. They have the million dollar hotel band (or whatever its called). basically just u2 members doing collaborations with other musicians but not U2 persay. hope that made sense. :p
