Hello Hello!!

hmmmmm...... @ 01:28 am

loopaygirl:
I'm currently hearin: CONAN

am I the only one who thinks bono being nominated for a nobel peace prize is well.... dumb. not that he hasn't done some great things but I think it really should be given to people who are in the trenches with the needy and not just some rock star. love bono but he is not a saint, he's just a regular person who does what he can. but then again isnt that what most people are. hmm. anyways I don't think he should win, but then again I really dont keep track of what the heck he does so I dont really know what hes done that would qualify for this in particular and yes i know about data and jubilee and all that junk but i think you get my point.......

I think with all his work he is more than qualified to be nominated for the award. It's also important to note that this award isn't given to 'people in the trenches'. Look at the nominees. Almost all are wealthy, influential, or have some kind of advantage over 'normal' people.

He's just being nominated. Most likely he won't win.

Bono is genuinely concerned about the welfare of other countries in need, which is more than I can say for allot of people, including other peace prize nominees.

I think part of it is simply the fact that he is in a position (fame, money, etc) where he doesn't need to care, but still does. This behavior goes way back to before the band was well known.. when he was in africa playing and singing with starving kids. I think the honor is well deserved, personally.

i can think of few people that deserve it more than he does, and i think the fact that he's a rock star makes a major statement about breaking down stereotypes concerning "his kind."

if he wins, well... i'll be proud that they can look past the flip shades and the rock music and see that he's a beautiful human being with a giant heart.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. I don't think what he does for a living should disadvantage him or take away from what he has contributed. That said, he probably won't win... yet.

i don't think he'll win it either, but just being nominated is a big step. :)

or perhaps I should clarify it that I don't see him deserving the award to be awarded to JUST him. like if he got it I think there are several people he's worked with who should get it too. if that makes sense.

Personally...I'd prefer Bono to win than whats-his-name French President guy!! Bono may be a rock star...but at least he tries to get his hands dirty to help those in need. He does go on "missions" to Africa and all that...but more importantly...he goes to the WTO and heads of states and makes them aware of the need! He's helping to open the eyes of many "blind" powerful people...so something can actually get done...because there really is little he can do on his own...even with so much money.

I have no opinion on whether he should win it or not. But I wouldn't say he doesn't deserve it!

yeah, the award should be for the people 'in the trenches', the unknowns who dedicate their lives to helping, but its never like that.

Of any famous person, bono is a good nominee i think. Having said that, he's already got plenty of recognition for his aid work

I think it's more of the idea of him being a "rock star" that people have trouble grasping the idea of him winning a Peace Prize. As you said, he's just a "normal" person, who just happens to have an un-normail life.

You see... the way I see it, he has spent the majority of his life concerned with other people... other countries... other political spheres. It's just always been part of who he is. It's just that recently, he's been more of a self proclaimed nuisance about these things. (an a much appreciated one at that...)

I had a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of him winning to, and I'm a hard-core fan. But you know what. I think he deserves it. In my opinion, there have been pass Nobel Peace Prize Winners who haven't done nearly as much. But definitely the position of Bono's "job" will put him in a stereotype that's hard to look past.

Just my two cents...

I agree with those who said that it's nice to just see him nominated. I don't think he actually would win, which is okay by me: can you imagine the backlash? I'd still lurve him, but I'm funny that way about the music/movies/TV shows I like -- I want everyone else to love them, too!

quite a bit of debate on this topic...that's good!

i agree with you. i'm probably hardly worthy to be in the same room as bono, and yet there are those who are above and beyond even him. people who have been doing it longer, unnoticed, or have been going at it day in and day out for years and years with little recognition. bono's great, he's fantastic, i wish i could be like him. but he gets his dues aplenty (can we say musicares2003?) and there are people out there who could better use the nobel prize to draw attention to the causes they are working for.

how refreshing. I read all 16 posts preceding yours, and all I got out of them was a halfhearted - "yeah, I guess." But my reaction to this was - "ditto." I'm a full out Bono lover, and he should definitely be commended for his efforts to actually DO SOMETHING, as opposed to all those stars out there who have so many avenues to be influential, but don't. And instead create little foundations named after themselves. But anyways, that's another story. I guess I just wish that the people that could be commended could BE those "people in the trenches", people who actually NEED more attention. (not to slight efforts in Africa by any means...I actually did my AP paper on the debt crisis last year BECAUSE of bono :) )...I guess what I'm trying to say can be summed up in this...While a few millions of dollars are spent on the pageantry of nominating and awarding people with the Nobel Peace Prize...that money and all the publicity...would be better used HELPING PEOPLE. ahh life sucks as a 17-year-old cynic.
