I really like this song. It's probably in my top ten.

I feel like I can relate to the verses more than the chorus tho'.

Bono really seems to be in touch with like, a woman's perspective and maybe that not it all. But, there are very few male artists whose songs I can identify completely with.

Anyways. Yeah, I dig that song, and it's one I can sing and sound cool.

One of my top 5 songs by U2. I love Bono's perspective and like glitterkittykid said, Bono really seems to be in touch with like, a woman's perspective. I related w/that totally.

have the lyrics felt personal? yes, very recently. there's someone infront of my face and if he stay's everything would be great, but he's living in his own world {his past} and it's just difficult. i want him to stay, but he's so faraway... ;)

And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don't feel a thing.

If I could stay, then the night would give you up.
Stay, and the day would keep its trust.
Stay, and the night would be enough.

Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio.
With satellite television
You can go anywhere:
Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin.

And, if you listen, I can't call.
And, if you jump, you just might fall.
And, if you shout, I'll only hear you

~~~~~
To me, some of those lyrics are about God/Spirituality. One of my friends rocknrollbirdie pointed it out to me and at first I didn't get it but it means a lot to me, having not felt too much about trusting God lately in my life. I am far from a devout christian, but it makes me think. It makes me think good things.
I've looked through him, I've talked at him, I've not felt a thing.
And if I shout, he will only hear me...... he is far away, but so close....
One of my alltime favorites. To this day that song reminds me of the trials and tribulations that I faced in college. Maybe because I was listening to Zooropa a lot then... (which is actually one of my alltime favorite U2 albums). I dunno... I love it live too, and was able to see it live on the elevation tour which made my night.
I love the version on the Sydney concert VHS tape...
I agree. The Sydney-version is definately one of my favorites.
I dl-ed a version from the Elevation Tour as well, and Bono sings it much more powerfully, though. I like both because they represent the wide range of emotions you can feel when listening to it.
personal? yes, but i won't get into that here.
i will say, tho, that seeing him sing this was one of my highlights from the elevation tour. i was at the san jose 2 show, the one where they first did kite, and did stay for the first time ever in the states. (that's also the show where bono said afterwards he's never been so happy on stage. it really showed...)
i was on the rail at the tip of the heart, and they did the song as a surprise, it wasn't on the setlist. someone brought him the lyrics, and everyone around us could see what song it was. bono was like, "shh, don't tell them". hee.
the way he sang the song was so powerful. it felt like after not singing it for so long, he was really in touch with the meaning, with the lyrics, like he was remembering why he wrote it in the first place. i especially remember the line "you say when he hits you you don't mind.. because when he hurts you, you feel alive.." .. like glitterkittykid said, definitely in touch with a woman's perspective. his performance was absolutely jaw-dropping.
[also... if you ever get the chance to go to berlin, you will never see the video the same way. going up in that angel statue is something i will never forget...]
This is my second-favorite U2 song (after Ultraviolet Light).
Every guy I've ever dated, I've told him that his chances of having sex with me would be greatly improved if he were to sing Stay to me.
Personally, it seems like there's a lot of romance in the relationship that the speaker has with the object of his affection, but there are things... logical/rational/idiotic things that seem to keep them apart. It feels like the guy is telling the girl, "Look, we love each other. Just stay with me tonite and I'll show you."
It may seem simple and superficial, but I think that it's about a couple who are afraid of trusting each other enough to fully enjoy the relationship.
I never thought of this song having a uplifting spirital message, but after reading some ideas, its something I will take a look at.
This song has always been sad/bittersweet for me. In high school, it was a good description of a relationship I was in. I was there for this girl, but at the same time I wasn't (basically I had a crush on her but she didn't know and I couldn't tell her).
Now that I've grown out of the relationship and am happily married, this song has a somewhat different meaning for me. It sort of goes hand-in-hand with the video's interpretation. I see this song as being about a dead man talking to his old lover. She has hooked up with someone new who abuses her, makes her go out at 3am to pick him up cigarettes, etc. Meanwhile, the speaker can only watch, and wish that he could be with her again.
If I could stay
Then the night would give you up
Stay then the day would keep its trust
Stay with the demons you drowned
Stay with the spirit I found
Stay and the night would be enough
