Hello Hello!!

question for the guitar enthusiasts among us (indulge me, I'm procrastinating) @ 01:17 am

u2biscuit:
If, when you see U2 live (be it in person or on tape), you pay any attention to Edge (as I do most of the time), and you are a guitar enthusiast, you know Edge uses different guitar's for different songs (often the same one he used when the song was recorded).

So, for fellow guitar and Edge enthusiasts, do you have a favorite Edge guitar? If so, is it the:

Femder Stratocaster (used on almost all the 80's hits like WTSHNN and Bad);
Les Paul (seen on UTEOTW, Walk On...probably the one he uses most often);
Rickenbacker (used on Mysterious Ways and Even Better Than the Real Thing);
Infinite (used for WOWY, designed by Daniel Lanois, only like four or five made I think);
Gibson (used for Elevation, though I forget which model he used);
Hammer (used during Elevation Tour on Beautiful Day, New York, I Will Follow, OOC); or just the good old acoustic used to great effect for Stay during the Elevation tour?

Personally, I like the Fender Strat, mostly because of the songs I associate with it, though he's probably done his most cutting edge work on the Les Paul. I tried play UTEOTW on a Les Paul once and it sounded amazing!

Discuss amongst yourselves. If you just enjoy Edge's sound and don't care what he uses to create it, then never mind...

I'd have to say the Fender Strat. He's developed some of his best signature tones and licks on that guitar...but hey, i play a highly modified Ibanez Voyager, and usually play metal, so what would i know about Edge's work? Hehe.

But while we're on the subject of Edge's guitar work...what pisses me off is when people criticize him for not having more "technical expertise" (not to mention talentless Henry Rollins claiming Edge "has been playing that same guitar riff for 20 years"). I've mastered guitar virtuoso compositions, but can't quite pull off much of Edge's unique tone colors, effects, and playing style. If critics of the one and only Edge can develop tones as rich as his, match his versitility, and write riffs that will be remembered for generations to come, then criticize away. That's right, fuckers.

Yep...the Fender Strat for sure! It's a classic! I have a friend who has a LOT of guitars (he mostly buys whatever he sees The Edge with...ha) and his red and black U2 Fender Strat is my fave. I like the Gibson too. But if I could pick one to have...I'd definitely go the Fender.

What I wanna know...is how many Les Pauls did the Edge go through on the Elevation tour...due to the "performace" of UTEOTW...in which the guitar recieved a fair hammering from Bono's foot! (did that happen every night??)

the goldtop les paul edge plays during uteotw didn't ever get destroyed, bono just hit the strings with his foot and mic.
and yeah, every night!

Re:

Pretty hard to hit the strings are not touch the fret board...which (with the amount of shows they did) would weaken the neck...and the pressure on the string would damage the bridge! I also noticed on the Boston DVD that Edge threw the guitar at the end of the song too. So...I still reckon that Edge must have surely used more than 1 les paul! It's not like he couldn't afford it! haha. :P

what you say is probably true... altho i imagine any damage that was done he could easily have fixed. he has copies of every guitar he has, so every night it probably wasn't the same guitar, but i also know that he gets pretty attached to them, has favourites etc. just can't see him scrapping them, y'know?

oh, and the guitar that he kicked was one of his rickenbackers. he's got two of those that i know of, i'm sure any damage was easily fixed.
you know that sparkly gibson that bono used for i will follow during elevation, the one that he actually almost smashed entirely in oakland? that one was completely repaired too. :-)

Plus, his guitar tech, Dallas, works throughout every show to make any necessary repairs. So while I'm sure Edge does damage to the guitars, they are ably repaired.

fyi, it was the rickenbacker he threw on Live in Boston, and that wasn't a regular happening...he was just pissed.

I used to go for the Fender Strat but now I'm all about the Les Paul. I'm not really anything close to a guitar afficionado, though.

And I thought the guitar he used on Beautiful Day and I Will Follow was his old Gibson Explorer...? I also thought the Infinite guitar was designed by Michael Brook, but I could be wrong about that, too.

Well missy, someone I know just fired up the Elevation DVD and reported that it looks awfully like an ebow! But they hardly show any of the band who aren't Bono during that song, so it's kind of hard to tell.S

emmmmm.... no.
not like i've actually watched boston yet (%-P), but i can tell you from there being no one and nothing in between edge's hands and my eyes on more than one occasion that at least on the first leg shows before boston he did not use one.
and what i meant by 'thing' up there was actually the brand name of the guitar. it's a funky thing... same kind he used for discotheque on popmart (and possibly elevation, but i never got to see discotheque/sats).

I'm pretty sure he used A Fender Telecaster for Discotheque and WOWY on PopMart, but I thought he had switched back to the Infinite, because it looked like a different guitar on Elevation.

Dang, wish my DVD-ROM was working properly so I could pop in the Elevation DVD and check it out. For that matter, I wish I had been that close to Edge at some point during the tour.

The Infinite Guitar System isn't actually a guitar but rather a modification to an existing guitar combined with an external processor. Literally any electric guitar can be modified into an "infinite guitar", so you can't tell much just by *looking* at the guitar. To get the kind of sustain he needs for WOWY, he needs to either be using Infinite Guitar or some other infinite-sustain system, or else be using a handheld device like an EBow. Since WOWY has parts where the sustain isn't needed, my bet is on the Infinite Guitar, as it's much easier to just step on a pedal than stick an EBow in your pocket and switch to a normal pick really fast.

Ahh, that makes sense. Now that I think about it, you can see Edge using an EBow on ZOO TV Live in Sydney, because he plays WOWY on the Les Paul. And yeah, he probably just presses a pedal for when he needs the sustain. I still don't think he used the Telecaster during the Elevation Tour, but my memory could be cloudy.

so i hopped over to http://www.u2sound.de cos i couldn't remember the name of the guitars he was using for wowy, discotheque etc, and i found this:

Infinite Guitar (Fender Squire 19XX), which was used for the recording for "With or without you". This guitar has a built-in sustainer, which works identical to a normal E-bow. This guitar should be a modified Squier Stratocaster, it is black with a maple neck and a white pickguard. It has a Seymour Duncan pickup in the bridge, an electromagnetic transducer in the neck and a graphite nut. You can also notice the double input jack (one is made of brass). The guitar, together with a custom made rack unit, are the "Infinite guitar" system.

these are the guitars i was talking about:

Fernades Decade Elite Sustain Guitar 199X, light blue, white perlmut pickguard, used during POP Mart for "With or Without you" and "Discotheque" on the B Stage.

Fernades Decade Elite Sustain Guitar 199X, orange, white perlmut pickguard, used as the spare guitar for the above listed one. Used during the Elevation Tour and for the Popmart show in Las Vegas for "Discotheque".

Fernades Decade Elite Sustain Guitar 199X, light green, white perlmut pickguard, seen in U2's Hanover Quay studios.

Fernades Native Pro Sustain Guitar 200X, dark green, white pickguard, with a Decade Elite neck, used for "With or without you" during the Elevation Tour.

I thought it was a Gibson Explorer too, but I'm more of a bass aficionado and I don't claim to know a lot about guitars. ;) Of all his guitars, I like that one and the Les Paul the best.
