Best of 1990-2000 @ 05:47 pm

I'm currently feelin: contemplative contemplative

Was anyone besides myself disappointed with the Best of 1990-2000 CD that came out in December? It may be because I think of the 1980-1990 era as having the stronger style and more standout songs (Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride, I Will Follow, Where the Streets Have No Name), but I thought a lot was missed in the 1990-2000 album. I think "The Fly", "Lemon", "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses", and "If God Will Send His Angels" would have been better additions to the album than some songs ("Miss Sarajevo", namely). I don't hold a special admiration for "Electrical Storm", "Discotheque", or "Even Better Than the Real Thing", perhaps because they sound alike to me. Of course, it could be because I'm looking for such complete uniqueness that was seen in the popular songs of the 80s... and also because I think that some better songs on the 90s albums were overlooked for more popular ones.

Ideas?

Everyone to his/her own.

I personally love Electrical Storm! Rocks me! I prefer the full band version to the William Orbit mix. When the song really kicks in and towards the end...it takes me away! :)

No one will ever be happy with the exact track list. I would have dropped Staring At The Sun and Miss Sarajevo and included Ultra Violet and Please. And I also feel Do You Feel Loved and The Fly were unfortunate to miss out. But I think the tracklist represents what the band saw as represting their work for the last 10 years. So...as long as they're happy.

I rather like most of the songs on 90-00...

The only exceptions being Numb and Gone. And as far as an individual CD goes, I think it works better as an album than 80-90, which has a very disjointed feel even though most of the songs are great. 90-00 works better as stand-alone CD, IMO, even though the tracks may not be as great.

The general selection was bad, but the B Sides were worse!

I was quite surprised with the track listing too. I was annoyed about 'The Fly' not being present, but particularly 'Walk On' and 'Elevation' - not even on the B-Sides. I also think there was alot of work from the ATYCLB album that should have been on there - 'Peace on Earth' particularly after 9/11, but i suppose by including all these tracks you run the risk of making a disguised reprint of ATYCLB. The B-sides were worse. I love U2, but I was a bit annoyed that almost all the B-sides were remixes. The 1980-1990 B-sides were brilliant, with alot of new material, needless to say i was extremely disappointed with the selected songs this time round. I'd rather have heard new material.
