The answer spread is very interesting. Makes me wonder just how many of you out there are like me...got into U2 when I was 9; parents wouldn't let me go to concerts until I was 16 (first concert -- aside from The Police at Disneyland when I was 10 -- was REM's Green Tour), so missed out on lots of good U2 shows until then. Musical geographic locations killed my ops for seeing the ZOO tour, but...I think I kinda made up for it with the number of PopMart and Elevation shows I attended. ;)

Cool poll...thanks!

I am finding the answers very interesting too. I'm surprised at how few people here saw the Zoo tours, given that a reasonable handful of people were fans before then.

Gosh, I envy you becoming a U2 fan at the age of 9 (even though you must have been gutted not to see them live for so many years)... I didn't discover them until I was 16, so I missed out on even *hearing* about those great tours when they were happening.

I wasn't really aware of concerts until the JT tour, and OH MY was I gutted then! Especially when my mom wouldn't let sweet 13-year-old me skip school to see them play downtown on the roof of a liquor store (I live in the LA area)...

But ya...me getting into U2 was the result of being home from school sick and sneaking MTV while my mom went out on an errand (I wasn't supposed to watch MTV because my mom thought it was too smutty for a kid). I saw the "New Year's Day" video and was hooked.

A big part of the reason that I haven't seen more tours and got into U2 relatively late is age. I was 13 when I became a fan--just after Achtung Baby came out. I wasn't allowed to go to shows then, not by myself, and my parents I don't think had a clue about U2. In 1997 I was 17 and my parents nearly didn't let me go to PopMart, but I managed to convince them by spending my own money to go and paid for half of my best friend's ticket so I could have someone to go with.

however, I have loved them ever since I can remember...I just started getting obsessed with them in 97. with or without you has long been my favorite song ever.

I got into them at around 1985. I liked them before but I didn't really take notice if you know what I mean before then. I would have seen them at the US Festival had it not been for my mother forbidding me to go. I started to really take notice during UF but it was after their tour was over. I had a chance to go but declined (what an idiot I was). After I saw the JT tour, THAT WAS IT...I WAS A CHANGED WOMAN!!! LOL!!

my answers aren't as good as I would have wished ... being born in 1983, I couldn't have seen many tours ... but i love every U2 period, it's so different. i like bands that can put themselves back in question

Yeah, I was born in '83 too, but I love every U2 era (though I do have my preferences).

Looks like la_vation is the most experienced out of all of us... the only person to have seen a tour as long ago as War!

the answers reflect an awful lot about the active members in this community really.

From them you can safely assume (and upon reading the other comments) most of the U2 fans that post here are still quite young compared to myself. Hence the lack of seeing earlier tours.

*THAT* and the fact that the majority are very recent fans to U2 (in the last 6 years) suddenly makes a lot of things quite clear re: the posters and the posts.

V interesting. Got any more cool poll ideas Annie?

Agreed. I already suspected that the majority of the LJ community members were newer fans, but I thought I'd do the poll to see if I could confirm this. It's interesting that Elevation is the ONLY tour where more people saw it than didn't. I'm surprised, though, that only one person saw the War tour and only two saw the UF tour!

I'll give some thought to doing more polls, this one seemed to have a very good response.
