Signs of things to come @ 03:38 pm

I'm currently feelin: good good

Today, I'd been using the Wayback Machine to explore past editions of atu2.com and came across an interesting and rather thought-provoking poll: What recent song do you hope is a sign of things to come?

This poll comes from way back in December of 1998, when we'd just seen the release of the first Best of and were anticipating the band's next move. (As you can see, "Mofo" and "North and South of the River" tied at 37%.)

The question is well worth posing again, seeing as we're between the second Best of and the next "next album" :D

What recent song do you hope is a sign of things to come?

(I think "recent" could also include A- and B-sides from ATYCLB, as well; it's material from the most recent LP, after all!)

I know this may be controversial...
But the first thing that came to my mind when I read this was
"Electrical Storm"

*thinks some more*
I also really love "Always" - yay for b-sides!!

I was thinking that since they're talking about a heavier sound and whatnot, that their new sound would be something like the Beat On The Brat cover that they did.

Electrical Storm is also a good new direction though. :)

It seems I'm the only one who dislikes Electrical Storm... LOL.

Anyway... "Always", "Kite"... but I'm always hoping for a return to the style they had in the 80s. Perhaps I'm just a cranky teenager who doesn't like change... heheh. =)

I would agree that the Beat On The Brat cover is promising, I don't want another mostly slow kinda album like ATYCLB. I would also agree that hearing more stuff in the vein of Always would be welcome. Something with some real energy and passion and magic....

Personally, I think "Big Girls are Best," "New York," "Summer Rain," "Kite," and some aspects of "Electrical Storm" (especially the Ulrick Mix) and "Elevation" are good signs of songs to come. Of course, I could also go for more Edge-iness; he's fairly subdued on most of those tracks.

Side rant: Although I'm fond of both "Electrical Storm" and "The Hands That Built America," I don't think I've been fully satisfied by them. There are different parts of different mixes of each that I've liked... if only they could just channel all that goodness into a single mix!
