what do you all think of this book? (or how it will be, since it was just published today) from what i've heard and read, i think it just paints them in a negative light, showing nothing but the bad (or not too bad) stuff.but then of course, if you don't like what it has in it, don't read it, right?

Tall Story About Bono's Image and His 'Leg-Up' to Stardom

By Shane Hickey

Liposuction, high heels and image worries are hardly rock 'n' roll but
were the main concerns of Bono while on tour, according to a new book
on U2.

The book, "Inside the Zoo with U2" published today, claims to give a
full insider account of life on the road in the late 1980s with the
Irish band - including detailing the lead singer's on-going worries
about his image.

Author Lola Cashman, a former stylist for the band, joined the U2
entourage after Bono met her in 1987 and asked her to give her view on
the group's image.

She claims the lead singer was constantly obsessed with his weight and
even resorted to wearing high heels in order to appear taller - having
first arisen as a concern when he found out he was due to meet Bruce

"Then he turned and said to me earnestly that he had to be taller than
Bruce Springsteen" writes Cashman in the book. "I said,
tongue-in-cheek, that the only thing I could propose at such late
notice was for him to wear a pair of high-heel shoes. To my surprise,
he thought it a very good idea. Bono's lack of poise meant we had to
sit and devise a plan which would allow him to pull off the farce
without him looking like a drag queen. The consensus was that, on
meeting Bruce Springsteen, Bono would remain seated, standing only to
shake his hand.

"The shoe plan was to be repeated several times throughout the tour,
and from now on, his shoes and boots were to be made with raised
insoles and wedges that would afford him height comfort."

As well as worries over his height, Bono's weight was also a constant
cause of concern for the diminutive frontman and also resulted in calls
for Cashman to enquire about sourcing him information on plastic

"He was constantly reiterating his insecurities about his appearance.
On this particular day he was complaining that his stomach was bloated
and the inside of his thighs were sore due to chafing, brought on by
continual sweating on a hot stage.

"Bono felt that some liposuction, along with a fitness trainer, could
be a short-term panacea, putting him on course for a more youthful and
slimmer look."

The insecurity also went into financial concerns according to the
author who says Bono was hesitant to invest in the Dublin docks.

So far, I actually find it sort of interesting. The issues mentioned are ones I've heard of before, but I'd probably read it. I agree that it doesn't seem to put them in the greatest light, so far.

I really think the only people who will care so much about Bono's height/weight/overall appearance issues are those that have never personally had them, or are waiting to attack the band. The guys in U2 are just as human as anyone else.

I'd really have to read the whole thing to give a true opinion. ;)

"She depicts Bono as a reclusive, prone to mood swings and obsessed by his image.

In the book, Cashman writes: "Bono was incredibly concerned about his look and image.

"Sometimes after a gig, instead of attending a party, Bono would go back to his hotel room and sit quietly alone, not wanting to face people.

"There were times that I found it bizarre, me sitting alone with this idol, listening to him talk about his life."

Cashman, stylist with the band during the Joshua Tree and Rattle And Hum tours, also claims Bono wore special platform shoes to appear taller."

Yeah... besides which, even if this stuff is true and everything, what the hell is wrong with having insecurities?  I assume her life is perfect and she thinks that anyone who ever has a *worry* is some kind of freak. Well screw her!

I think the key word to this biatch's opinions is So what? U2 is larger than life, and Bono had to take a lot of criticism and think about small things such as mentioned in the passage to get there. I'm glad he cared about how he represented himself instead of thinking he would make it just because. It just shows further how brilliant and sincere he is. Sheesh, this lady needs to get a life.

The thing is they are probably mostly "true"
And who wouldn't be concerned about height and weight when in the public eye.
I do however remember seeing pictures of Bono and Bruce from the early 80's, so they have obviously met before... so I am not buying that "high heel" shit. He may have insoles and wedges put on his shoes, but honestly who really cares?
And WHO in the public eye is not concerned with their weight? In the late 80's early 90's Bono was considered a "sex symbol" and once that status is thrown onto someone, would they not be more concerned about their weight then your "average" person... I do believe so.

It sounds like she really dislikes Bono, and is using his "insecurities" against him..

So in other words she is nothing but a BITCH.

Well, at least you *know* there's nothing actually bad she can say when she has to resort to making perfectly human appearance concerns sound freakish to sell her book.
