the other day i listened to "boy" and then "atyclb" right after. then i got to thinking about bono's voice and i thought up an interesting little survey question so i could see what you all think:

which one do you hold THE MOST responsible for the change of bono's voice?
a) age
b) smoking
c) other (please share!)

Then it's Adam's fault. You know what they say about second- hand smoke. It's worse than smoking yourself. Adam smokes around him all the time.

Well, considering Bono was only 18-19 years old when Boy was recorded it is not suprising his voice sounds different now. I notice the biggest change after the mid-80s.

There's been a change in the actual way he sings, which I think is what makes the change between eras so pronounced... and only now is he *not* really putting on a voice, because his voice has become limited with age/smoking.

And damn the smoking for losing the falsetto. :( Age may have helped, but not *that* fast.

Didn't he also get told after Rattle and Hum that he had to change his phrasing or risk serious damage to his voice?

Smoking, definitely. Sure, aging would play a part, but the smoking definitely had a terrible impact on his voice. Go listen to Rattle And Hum followed by Popmart Mexico and you can really see that. When I first got Popmart Mexico, I was used to Rattle And Hum and had been watching it for the previous few days, and was initially greatly disappointed with how Bono's voice had changed (re: ruined) in the 9-10 years between the two films.

age

after all, even without smoking, his voice would change anyways over time. add smoking to the equation and it makes it worse. And its not like he was never going to age.

smoking and drinking and the hard life has contributed yes, but I get annoyed with people who whinge about how his voice doesn't sound the same as in Boy/War/Joshua Tree/R&H or whatever the damn album it is they are comparing his voice now to. I mean c'mon, even without the other stuff, surely you'd expect his voice to change and not remain the same over 20 or so years?!

Also, the fact that he never learnt to sing properly til so much later in his life. By not using his voice properly in those early years means he has actually done some damage to it over the years.

well, thankfully none of us seem to be whining much about it...

i like your last point, that's interesting, he really could have done some damage in the early years.

There's a lot at fault, most of which has been commented on already.

Look at some of the great talents over the years -- Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash -- all of them experienced similar "changes". I realize it's hard to "accept" when a singer/vocalist's style changes dramatically -- Bono being a perfect example. I found the change from the mid- to late-90s quite jarring back in the day; it has only been in recent years that I have grown to embrace and love all-things POP. In like manner, the differences between the late-80s/early 90's are quite noticeable; however, if viewed as independent pieces, the albums -- ALL of them, I might add -- stand up as great works. (Personally, I feel Bono was at his best in the 90s -- especially during the Passengers, POP years.) True, you don't get much better than Achtung Baby, but the intended change in direction, as well as the factors mentioned in previous posts, contributed to a more earnest styling. The same can be said for the differences in songwriting. The songs of Achtung Baby and POP are both beautiful and lyrical; however, they're expressed quite radically.

Thoughts?

hmm. im not really sure actually. I think he's still capable of 'sounding the same'..ok..maybe not from boy, but like joshua tree/actung baby. but i remember reading something, maybe even from bono himself, where it was talked about how, at least in actung baby, it was a consious effort to not overpower the songs with his voice. like, not sing really hard parts, just for the sake of singing them, you know? but to sing what sounded best for the song.

Personally, i cringe at some of the pre 90's stuff sometimes just for bono's voice alone. not really cringe, but think it sounds WAY cooler in the 90's. for example, how he sings 'bullet the blue sky' with sort of a 'put-on' voice. its also evident in 'still haven't found' from rattle and hum.

id say age is the biggest factor, followed by smoking/drinking. his allergy to alchohol was effecting his vocal chords, if i remember correctly. i think he just sings differently tho, as well. but still amazing!!

Age.

Nobody sounds the same at 18 as they do at 40.

Period.
