Hello Hello!!

November 16th, 2003

the one bad thing about POPMART... @ 02:04 am

echoboom:
I'm currently hearin: SMARTE'S - SESAMES TREAT

somtimes, it really bugs the hell out of me..

bands that have opened for u2 , for the most part have kicked ass.
i got to see the pixies , BADII and public enemy in 1992.

in 1997, various openers included rageagainstthemachine and primus. 2 extremely different, yet noteworthy bands.

SO WHY THE HELL DID WE GET SMASHMOUTH!?!?!?!

WTF? at the time they were just a one hit band of the month...
seriously,
they didnt fulfill any expectations that a stadium gig requires..

i just felt that leg of the tour was lacking an good opener.
we were shafted.

nothing againt smashmouth, theyve since had a few more singles and a small following, and i like some of their songs, but i wouldnt want them opening for u2 today, let alone in 97.

Ugh...I agree with you. Smashmouth was a dreadful opening act.

My favourite part of their set in Seattle was when they started badmouthing California. I just sat there and thought, "Dude, you guys are from San Jose."

*snicker*

I think most bands will end up with some poor support acts somewhere along the line. Elevation tour was no exception for poor supporting acts. Kelis? I have never heard anything more excruciating in my life.

She was absolutely awful at Slane and the beer tents must have had their busiest time of the day when she was on!! Would have been really good if they'd got PJ Harvey that day instead!!

I think we got shafted every single time. Rage against the machine was a loud, totally un-U2, aggressive, bunch of kids who yelled a lot. Smashmouth was just as bad. However none could rise to the level of God awfulness as Nelly Fratada when the trebble was so loud that she nerely pierced our eardrums; most people left the floor during her act.

I got stuck with The Disposable Heroes of Hipoprosy (an okay rap group but nothing really interesting) and The Sugarcubes during my part of ZOO TV's outside show. After seeing The Pixies open the indoor show, these two groups were such a huge letdown.

maybe not the best openers, but at least DHoH were experimental.
something interesting with message.

i would have passed on the sugarcubes..

In a smaller hall, DHoH could have been really cool to see. In a baseball stadium while I sat in the back of the building, it just didn't connect at all.

I really hope U2 themselves don't choose these horrid openers ...

I know what you mean. When they came back to the States for the 3rd leg of Elevation 3 of the opening acts I'd heard of them having were Garbage and No Doubt. I wouldn't have minded either of those. I like a few of their songs so it would have been okay. I got stuck with the Stereophonics. Never heard of them. Haven't heard of them since.

No Doubt was amazing when they opened for U2 (Austin)!! I am so glad I was able to go to that show. It made up for Nelly Futardo (Atlanta) and Smashmouth (Houston).

I was so unimpressed by Smashmouth that I completely forgot that I'd seen them until this thread reminded me that they opened during PopMart. :)

i would rather have had garbage than no doubt, but they were still great at the austin show.

i did end up downloading a stereophonics song and its good, but i would definitely say whoever saw them were shafted.

Stereophonics are a huge band in Ireland. They just did a show with JJ72 in Dublin at the Point, actually.

The Stereochronics are very well known in the UK, but god they're awful - you're lucky not to have heard of them!

I got JJ72 as the opening act, they were pretty good. They dedicated a song to Bono's dad which was really sweet.

It's hit and miss with U2's opening acts. Sure the Pixies were great, but they brought all sorts of drama with them that not only pissed off U2, but ended up destroying the band. Of course, Zoo TV also had a very fresh Pearl Jam.

I got Third Eye Blind on Popmart, which I couldn't stand. I never got into PJ Harvey, loved Garbage (on the closing night of Elevation, Larry played drums for "Only Happy When It Rains". Now THAT was cool!), sadly missed No Doubt.

I think U2 does have a say in the opening acts. But they have to work with the openers' schedule, and what they can afford to pay.

I saw Elevation in Houston, and it was P.J. Harvey's first nite... I guess some people get lucky :)

saw smashmouth at the popmart show in minneapolis at the metrodome. There was little/nobody there and the ones that were didn't look very interested in smashmouth. the lead singer was a prick to the audience... that's all i remember.
