How to divorce the record from the movie?

Van Diemen's Land
Hawkmoon 269
Heartland
All I Want Is You

It's hard for me to rate this as an album on its own since it's so intertwined with the movie for me... too many giddy memories of sitting in the theatre that first night, the whole place packed with cheering Boston fans as the first images flicked onto the screen. It was a pivotal experience for me back then as a teenager whose life had already been so heavily influenced by U2. I often forget what's on the movie vs. the record, and that, say, Exit as played onscreen is not there, or Sunday Bloody Sunday -- for me perhaps the two most emotionally powerful moments of the movie. The opening of Streets, Bad, even Pride -- on the record it doesn't do much for me but when I'm watching the movie it's an amazing thing.

Um hi, I'm new... *shy grin*

Van Diemen's Land, Hawkmoon 269, Desire, Angel of Harlem, Heartland, and All I Want Is You are my favourites.

I think I'd give it a 7. I have to be in the right mood for it, and it's probably my least favourite of their albums, but R&H definitely has some great songs on it. I'd rather watch the film than listen to the CD, though.

I rate it a 6.

I saw the film when it was released at the drive-in. Seeing the red lights of Where The Streets Have No Name ( staple at every U2 show) on such a giant screen was the coolest.

As far as the songs:
All Along The Watchtower
Desire
All I Want Is You
Bullet The Blue Sky
Heartland
Silver And Gold

I've only heard a few of the songs off of this album because I don't have a lot of their older stuff (the only 80's album of theirs I own is Joshua Tree). But I do enjoy Desire and All I Want Is You.

I also took a line from Love Rescue Me and used it as my graduation quote for this year:
I've conquered my past
The future is here at last
I stand at the entrance
To a new world I can see

Hmmm ... probably an 8. I find this one hard to rank for some reason, maybe because I'm like some of the other people who posted and have trouble differentiating it from the movie and such. The movie is easily an 11, no doubt about it. I absolutely adore Heartland - the most beautiful song U2's ever done, with the possible exception of Running To Stand Still - and I also love Bullet The Blue Sky, All I Want Is You, When Love Comes To Town, Hawkmoon 269, God Part II, Van Diemen's Land ... I'll stop there. The only song I don't like is Love Rescue Me.

The album is a 7.

Some good stuff, but definitely the end of a musical road for them. Actually, I can't even stand to hear Bono speak during some of his speeches at the time, because he sounds so freakin' pretentious and holier-than-thou. The Edge's guitar work saved this album. But like others have said, in certain moods, it really hits the spot.

Favs:

Heartland
Van Dieman's Land

7.

Van Dieman's Land
Helter Skelter [cover]
Angel of Harlem [first U2 song I played on the guitar]
Desire

I prefer watching the movie more so than listening to this album alone, for the visual effects.

I agree, this one is hard to rate. I think I'll say 8, because it has one of my two favorite songs of all time on it (HEARTLAND!!!) and for the most part I think it's wonderful. I may get flogged for this, but one thing I really do not like is I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. For some reason, the R&H version just turns me off, big time.

My favorites are (roughly in order):

Heartland (Just out of curiosity - does anyone know if there's a live recording of this anywhere? I don't know that they've ever actually played it, but I would love to hear it live. So. Much. Even standing in the heart with my Heartland sign didn't get it for me. *sigh*)
All I Want is You
Desire
Van Diemen's Land
Angel of Harlem
God Part II
Hawkmoon 269

Sadly enough, Heartland has never been played live. A tragedy, truly.
