Probably my second favourite U2 album. Lemon is a contender for my absolute favourite U2 song, so I guess that makes it my favourite track from the album. *g*  Other faves are Zooropa, Numb, Stay, Babyface and Dirty Day. Daddy's Gonna Pay is also worthy of mention here, though I prefer the live version!

Zooropa also gets my vote for best album cover, though Achtung Baby isn't far behind. :D

this is going to be long. gah.

I rate it a 1. Total loss.

I HATE Zooropa. HATE IT. "Lemon" broke my heart. It took my mental/emotional picture of the band I had cherished and smashed it on the floor.
The only things I can listen to off of it are Stay and The Wanderer (thank you Mr. Cash). Numb had some amusement value as a video but aside from that....

It took me a long, long time to come back to U2 after this album came out.

Some of that was my own stubbornness, but to someone like me who had been a hardcore fan in the heyday of Red Rocks, the white flags and Unforgettable Fire, it was as if I didn't know this band anymore -- and they didn't care if I did or not, as if they were saying To hell with all of you that got us here, this is what we're doing now and you can kiss our arses if you don't like it.

They weren't, of course, they were saying nothing of the sort.. they were a band following a direction they were interested in, pure and simple, as any band has a right to.
Of course we didn't want them to stagnate, to write things to please their fans rather than write the things they felt. Nobody wants JT2, or AB2, or even War2...

I do think they knew that what they were doing with Zooropa was going to be an abrupt about-face to many of their older fans like myself, but I'm not sure they expected (or deserved) the degree of backlash they got. I will admit that I was one of the people who would hear older U2 on the radio, sigh, and say "They used to be a good band.... I don't know what happened.."
(or worse, a newer song would come on and as I cringed, a friend would nudge me with a sneer and say "Didn't you used to like these guys?")

I have to say that the "new generation" of fans, people who were the age I was when I first heard U2 when Zooropa came out, are a group of people we all owe a lot to, because if you had not stepped in when we turned away in selfishness there might not be a U2 anymore. You filled in where we walked away, able to see the band's new direction with youthful new appreciation instead of our jaded bitterness. You gave them a reason to keep making albums. Gods know we certainly didn't.

My own stupidity and willing blindness kept me away from U2 far longer than I should have. I missed Pop completely, and damn near missed out on ATYCLB, because I was still so upset about Zooropa. It took Electrical Storm to bring me back.
If I'd stopped being such an ass for a few minutes I might've come back a lot sooner. In a few days it will mark twenty years, TWENTY YEARS, that I've been a U2 fan. Zooropa is to me the absolute low point over that time but I'm so happy of the fact that I can once again be a loud and proud U2 fan.

I do understand what you are saying. I have been a fan for approx 17 years. I know how the change effected the way you thought of them as a band. It was good to read about what they thought of their "new direction" because they felt it was the way they should go. I think all bands face this too. I admire them for their willingness to experiment.

Thanks for your honest thoughtful opinion on it. :) It means a lot.

6.5 -- Some really great songs (my faves listed here) but the rest to me were just filler songs. I often think they should have spent a little more time with this album. But these songs listed here are definitely in the top of my U2 song list.

  • Zooropa
  • Numb
  • Lemon
  • Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
  • The First Time
  • Dirty Day

"The Wanderer" gets a very hnorable mention =)

Hmmm ... probably a 7. I adore Zooropa, Numb, Lemon, Stay, Some Days Are Better Than Others, and The Wanderer, but I still am not really sure about Babyface, Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car took a while to grow on me, The First Time is too bland, and Dirty Day never did much for me.

hmm a 7 I think.
I gave a few of these songs quite a bit of playtime, and the zooTV concert gave some more life to them.

favorites (having lots to do with the live versions on zooTV):
daddy's gonna pay for your crashed car (macphisto!)
lemon (midniiiiight...)
numb is one I remember from before I was obseesed with them (had always liked them as long as I can remember) and I remember being very entertained by the video for this song.

and I am excited to say I decided that zooropa is one of their sexiest songs to me, one of the songs I'd most like to do the deed to.

unfortunately, I did not care much for a few of these songs - the wanderer (sorry johnny:( ) and dirty day.

6 or 7.

My favorites are:

Stay (Faraway, So Close!) - Note: it became even more a favorite after the Elevation concert in Chicago the first night... was anyone else there? The band brought up a guy from the audience whose name was Jonathan who apparently had been going to several concerts with a sign declaring "ME + PIANO = STAY" and he played with them. HE PLAYED WITH THEM. ARGH!!! IT WAS GREAT!! One of my favorite moments of any concert experience. Before they started, Bono said, "Jonathan, if you're crap, you're off." :D Moving on.
Lemon
The First Time
Daddy's Gonna Pay...

And, uh... Macphisto rocks my world. ;) Even though I feel silly about it.

I do The Wanderer (mostly for the Johnny Cash factor, I'll admit), but I can't include it on my favorites from this album becaues I've never felt like it goes with the rest of it at all. It seems like they recorded it and thought it was cool that they had a song sung by Johnny Cash but didn't know where else to put it.

I give it a 9.

Its one of my favs, and I listen to it often.

granted, i am a new-ish fan, since 1998. I bought every studio album except ATYCLB waaaay after they were released. So I have a different perspective than long time fans. I knew Lemon and Numb before I bought the album, so I knew what to expect. I also expected to hate the album since I already had AB, JT, Boy and War at that point. But I was pleasantly surprised, and the album took on a life of its own. It was refreshing to me, after hearing albums that were fantastic, but this was something different. I can see why U2 needed to make the album. This album is probably their most underrated.

I'll go into my Pop rant when that post comes up, since that is another underrated album that is great...

Fav songs:
- Stay
- lemon
- Wanderer
- dirty day

You make a very good point about the new fan perspective... I've only been a fan since 1999, and I love (to varying degrees) all the albums that came out before I became a fan. When ATYCLB was released, I couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed with it, because I'd had the time to build up expectations of it (even though I tried very hard not to!). I still feel kind of disconnected from that album... I hope I'm not going to get this emotional block with all future U2 releases. :\

This one is hard to rate because, while I do love certain songs and I do think it's a good album, I almost never listen to it anymore... I listen to some songs from it, yes, but it's probably been two years since I've listened to the album as a whole. I would rate it a 7. Babyface and Some Days Are Better Than Others are the only U2 songs that I have never come to love even after repeated listens (I even started to appreciate The Playboy Mansion from Pop after I listened to it enough). I'll still listen to these two songs when they come on, but I never seek them out and I think Bono must have sleepwalked his way through the lyrics. But there are enough great songs on here to make up for Babyface and Some Days.

Favourite songs: Zooropa, Numb, Stay, Daddy's Gonna Pay..., Lemon, and Dirty Day. Honourable mention to The Wanderer, which I still think of as a Johnny Cash song because it was so obviously written for him (and well done, I might add).
