Hello Hello!!

Side One, Track One. @ 07:42 am

screendoor3:
I'm currently feelin: curious curious
I'm currently hearin: "Zoo Station"

U2 has put out ten studio albums and they are all superb, but have you ever noticed that it is often the first song that is the best on the record? Out of all the U2 albums, which one do you think has the best opening track?

I would have to say "Sunday Bloody Sunday" or "Zoo Station."

Actually, I take that back. A Sort of Homecoming is amazing as well.

Can't agree with Zoo Station because the rest of the album more than tops it.

So hard to choose!

Gloria - October: It's just such an amazingly awesome track!
A Sort Of Homecoming - The Unforgettable Fire: Beautiful. Stunning. Inspirational. Moving. I couldn't believe my ears when I first heard it, I was just in awe.
Where The Streets Have No Name - The Joshua Tree: The way the intro builds up is so well done and absolutely PERFECT. It's probably the ultimate opening track.

(Odds are Discotheque won't even get a look-in ...)

I like the live version of Gloria more.

ASOH is good, but it can't beat Zoo Station.

WTSHNN just starts out to slow for me. It picks up, but it's still too slow. Bullet would've been the best opening track for JT, but it is the song on the album that is least like the others, making it a bad choice for an opening track.

Either "I Will Follow" opening up Boy or "Where The Streets Have No Name" opening The Joshua Tree. The first is so energetic, idealistic, and refreshing (for an equally energetic, idealistic, and refreshing album), while the second is so spiritually uplifting (for the most spiritual rock ablum ever made). WTSHNN just builds and builds and then explodes and IWF starts off the whole album with a bang and sets the perfect tone for the rest of it.

I agree that "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a phenomenal opener as well, but I've never been that fond of "Zoo Station". Achtung Baby is my favorite U2 album, but I've always felt "Zoo Station" was one of the weaker tracks. Just my opinion, though. :)

"I Will Follow" is an amazing track, but WTSHNN stays too slow too long before the cresendo for my tastes. I still love it as a song, but I think openers should start with a bang, or quickly lead up to one like Zoo Station does.

Streets!! :D I love the way it builds in intensity and sets the sound for the rest of my favorite album of all time. ;)

'Zoo Station' is my runner up, because I've been hearing the weird xylophoney sounds that start it off (before the initial guitar crazy-ness) around my apartment for DAYS and I can't figure out what's rattling to make the noise! It's driving me crazy, but at least it gets Achtung Baby on the brain.

Streets is great but I don't like it as an opener. Bullet would've been better as an opener, but it doesn't really match the feel with the rest of the album musically. Therefore it would be a bad choice. ISHFWILF would've been a good opener also. WTSHNN stays too slow too long for my tastes. An opener should start with a bang in my opinion.

"Beautiful Day" is amazing, but I think it's still too freash in people's minds to be a serious contender. Maybe they've heard it on the radio too much or something, or maybe they're attached to the song that got them into U2 in the first place.

How can you not go with Streets for that answer.

Though I will say it is a tough choice, seeing as they all rock!

Zooropa. Put it this way, my ears had orgasms (eargasms!) the first time I heard the song. ;)

I'll never forget Edge's weird, spacy guitar effects at the beginning (which I've since been able to mimick on my guitar effects pedal) for as long as I live. Bono sounds great on it as well... really sensual. Adam and Larry shine on it too, great work on the bass and drums. It's really the tempo change, however, that makes the song. I absolutely LOVE it when songs switch over to another beat halfway through, yet still manage to retain the song's theme. To me, it's what makes songs like Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" so great.

Without a doubt: Streets!! I mean seriously name a better opening line then "I wanna run" that is just pure genius to start an album that way.

I agree, but so are "I can't believe the news today" and "I'm ready for laughing/I'm ready for what's next."

Where the Streets Have No Name - The Josuha Tree. Of course, it helps that this is my favorite U2 song.

Runner up:

Sunday Bloody Sunday - War

I was going to agree with you on Zoo Station, but then I saw brunerhyme suggest Zooropa and I thought ahhhh yes!  I can't decide which is better out of those two, they're both so amazing in totally different ways.

I'm such a Zoo girl. ;p

Just my 2 cents...

It's impossible to pick one favorite. I love every opening song on the studio albums. (OK, not "Helter Skelter." But that almost doesn't count as studio.) Otherwise, I can't pick.

Hrmmm.....wouldn't that make a great mix? The opening tracks of every U2 studio CD, or even live too. I think I may have to do that. :D

I would have to go with "I Will Follow" as my first choice, "Zoo Station" as my second.
