I'm currently feelin: excited excited

Hey guys,

I don't think I have anything too worthwhile to say. I just haven't posted in this community in... it's gotta be months. I never lost interest in U2, I just rediscovered their incredibility recently.

Come to think of it, I think I'm in need of advice. There are 5 U2 albums I have yet to own to complete my collection. The next time I earn enough money to go out and splurge on music, I'd like to pick up one, maybe push it to two. Which do you recommend that I pick up next?

* Boy
* October
* War
* The Unforgettable Fire
* Rattle and Hum

I know, I know, 2 or 3 of them are the essentials for any U2 fan. But any help would be much appreciated, though I'm sure I'll end up getting all 5 answers! And I'll eventually wind up with all of them.

Glad to be attempting to get back into the swing of things here. I did miss the community. :)

WAR ... War is a necessity! It's incredible. After that, I'd pick Unforgettable Fire.

The Unforgettable Fire, then War

There's something about TUF that is just so perfect - the music is amazing, and the lyrics of the songs are particularly poignant

Couldn't agree more about TUF. It's so atmospheric and beautiful; it flows together flawlessly and paints such vast musical landscapes in the mind.

I would say "War." But it's so hard to choose...they're all so great. I can't imagine life without one of them.

'Tis always good to get back into U2. For me personally, I don't ever get 'out' of U2, but I totally forget eras. For example, a few weeks ago, I rediscovered ZooTV.

Anyway ... I'll rank the five albums in the order I think you should buy them.

1. The Unforgettable Fire - I believe this is the best album ever made. Definitely U2's ultimate classic.
2. Boy - Best debut ever. It's hard to believe they were in their late teens when they made this.
3. October - Simply for Gloria.
4. Rattle And Hum - Great album; Heartland is possibly the most beautiful U2 song ever and Hawkmoon 269 is a current favourite of mine.
5. War - Red Light nearly ruins this album. Like A Song is vastly under-rated, Drowning Man is on the level of Heartland for beautiful, and Surrender seems to get overshadowed by Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day despite the fact it's awesome. Also, I very recently said that "if you don't like New Year's Day, you have no musical taste." Just felt like throwing that quote out there.

Yes, ask me again in an hour and I'll put 3-5 in a different order. 1-2 aren't changing any time soon, though. Do yourself a favour and talk people into buying them all for you! It worked for me! (I've never bought a U2 CD, or a CD by any other band. I love generous people ...)

I'd go for The Unforgettable Fire (mainly for Bad, A Sort of Homecoming and the title track), and then War (I love New Years Day, Two Hearts Beat as One and "40"). They're all awesome, really. I lost my copy of Boy shortly after I bought it *tear*, so I don't really know much about that album.

Heh, they're all essential. ;) I would first go with The Unforgettable Fire, and then War. Unforgettable Fire is so fantastic, and... well, War is too, I just put Unforgettable Fire ahead because I did. *cough* Recently I've also really been loving Boy, probably because I've just been listening to it more than usual. Rattle and Hum is a great album, the half live, half studio thing is kind of strange - but it is home to one of my favorite songs of all time in 'Heartland.'

I think I've just underminded my helpfulness by telling you that they're all good. ;) Meh, I would buy Unforgettable Fire next. There you go, my opinion.

I'd get The Unforgettable Fire, and then War.

The styles are considerably different, but both are really great albums.

Hi! :D Well, I'd personally go for Boy first (gotta love the lyrics and the music) and then War. They're awesome albums.

I don't really like October... I think it's a little bit boring, but you have to have it to complete your collection :P I'd buy it last.

You guys definitely shine through in a matter of 12 hours! Thanks for the input :)

I have heard a few snippets from October. *shrug* I didn't like what I heard, but if I'm gonna buy the other 4, I have to complete the collection! This is definitely going to be tough... thank God I'm getting paid again soon! Haha... thanks everybody :)

I actually think October is very underrated. There are some good tracks on it. Granted, it's not one of their best, but it really does grow on you...and the guitar in "Gloria" is just awesome. :D

As for your original question, THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE! It's amazing. The imagery is just perfect...it's a great album to listen to whilst taking a car trip.

I would say get Boy or War next. Boy *might* take a little while to grow on you (it did with me) but it's now one of my absolute favourites, so full of bouncy energy!  And War is good to own because it has such massive tunes on it, like NYD, SBS and Like A Song. However, if you're more in the mood for something soothing and atmospheric, then get TUF. Rattle & Hum is brilliant too, but I would maybe recommend getting that one last, as I did. :o)  I'm not such a huge fan of October, personally.

I agree about the boucy energy with boy. you can really feel the youthful exuberance.

I'd also go with unforgettable fire because it's magical.

I'm a-gonna agree with most people and say either War or UF. It depends on what you prefer/feel like listening to: War is harder rock, while UF is a bit gentler, more atmospheric. (The lyrics are also better, I think...the songs could be poems.)

The Unforgettable Fire
War
Boy
Rattle and Hum
October

The middle was hard, because I like War, Boy, and Rattle and Hum all for different reasons. October is my least favorite of the albums. The Unforgetable Fire has a lot of great songs, and seems to sounds like a lead in to The Joshua Tree.
