Honestly, I don't like any of these options. I'm not against downloading at all, and I don't think it's disrespectful to the band, but I'm not going to download it because I want to wait and hear the album when I'm actually holding it in my hands and I can go to my room & put it on the CD player. Just 'cos I'm materialistic like that.

Yeah, that would certainly be my main reason for not downloading the album under "normal" circumstances.

The morals come into play additionally if these stolen, unfinished tracks go online without the band's consent, though. They've apparently put so much effort into making the album perfect, it would be such a smack in the face to them if everyone went grabbing the songs months in advance before they're ready to be released. :(  It's like spoiling someone's surprise party that was so lovingly planned...

Oh, well, if that was the case, I'd pick option C. If they did like Bono said they would and immediately put it up on iTunes, then I'd wait.

Amen. I get a high off the anticipation, the wait, the first time you hear it on the radio.

Personally, I see no problem with downloading it the second it appears online. I do not use iTunes and probably never will, and I'm still going to buy the album the second it appears in stores, so the band isn't losing any profit from me and I still get the hear the music early. Win-win really.

Yeah, I got ATYCLB online about a month before it came out, but still bought it the day it came out. I've actually bought several copies of it since then, for friends and all, and God only knows how much they've earned just on my tour tickets and concert swag and all :)

I'm a consumer

I'll download it the moment it becomes available. I'll also buy it as soon as it's available for sale in the US.

I'm so not going to download it even if it's legal. The band wasn't planning on making it available online. I think I'll be a loyal fan by doing what the band had planned us to do: buy the CD in November.

Exactly.

However... if it is released early in stores due to this, I'll still buy it as soon as it's released. Not only is the group moving to get it out, but it also kind of smacks in the face of those who stole it, which I like the idea of.

That makes zero sense. If it's legal, then the band has "blessed" that distribution method.

If it's a practically perfect copy, then why haven't they released it already? (Hint: outdated distribution method defended by useless middlemen unwilling to die gracefully.)

This story doesn't pass the smell test. Nobody brings a live CD to a photo shoot, where this CD was supposedly stolen. The usual industry practice is to shoot a photo of the packaging, which is provided without the actual CD, which may not even be complete at the time of the photo shoot. Anyone who would take the final unreleased product to a photo shoot, where there are a whole lot of bozos floating around just waiting to steal anything that's not nailed down, well, they're just asking for trouble. That's the whole reason to send faked comps instead of live product to shoots.

then the band has "blessed" that distribution method.

But that would be because they had to or were forced to, not because they had wanted it to be that way in the first place.

And about the story, I read that Edge had taken his copy of the CD to listen to it while they were being photographed. And he had neglected to take the CD out of the cd player before going inside the huge pool where they were being photographed... I do agree with you. How come he didn't think about someone wanting to steal it?.
But oh well, it's stolen now. What can he do?

I pretty much buy all my new music on iTunes these days unless it's not available there. That's how I'd planned on purchasing the U2 album before all this happened, and if it's available earlier due to this person stealing the songs and putting them on the Internet, it doesn't change my plans about how I'm getting it. I do wish this hadn't happened, and I hope these tracks don't end up on the Internet illegally so that U2 can take the time to polish the songs and present them like they wanted.

I'm waiting, but just because I want to experience this one totally and not like I did the last couple of times by downloading.

when atyclb came out, and this was back when the entire album was available via download from different areas, i still bought like 4 copies, and gave 3 of them away. As long as you still buy the album in stores, or via itunes, I don't see a problem with downloading it.

i love reading the cd case, and looking at all the pictures, so its not just the music for me. besides, i root for my favorite band to get the public recognition, and sales that will enable it to continue to be relavant in today's crazy media. long live u2!

i also wouldn't mind hearing some of the 'rough' cuts of the songs, but i hope those 'rough cuts' don't become the final cut, unless the band wants it that way. like, i don't want this to force them to release songs that aren't ready..

U2's legal team is working pro bono on this case.

In other news, a French police spokesman talking about the stolen U2 album confirmed that "We still haven't found what we're looking for."
