Hello Hello!!

stateless:
I'm currently feelin: hot hot

it seems to me that more than any other cover, i've heard most people say they hate U2's version of unchained melody. (the recorded one, the b-side; not live.) it's always shocked me, really, cos i love it. i wonder if it's cos most were attached to (or just used to) the original, or if they just think it's crap? i never had a tie with the original. it was always just... there. i dunno. but when i heard U2's, i suddenly understood it. the way bono sings it makes the lyrics stand out, makes the emotion of it much more apparent. there is so much ache. i don't feel that from any other version.

the overall flow of it... the guitar rolling in persistent waves, the bass and the movement it brings... just renders me speechless.

what do you guys think of it? and why?

I always loved this song, but I never knew that other people didn't. It's always been my favourite version of the song -- it always comes first to mind when thinking of it, rather than the original. Bono's vocal is simply gorgeous, and I think the song brings out a richness in his voice that most of their songs don't.
The drumming on this song is haunting -- the echoing quality is really powerful, and the bassline makes me shiver. Edge's guitar at the beginning and end strikes me as well; you can definitely tell it's a Joshua Tree b-side, but it's lovely and original.
I absolutely love this song and I can't believe people don't like it.

it's quite beautiful, i think. other versions are happy and peppy, while this one's very sad, like the lyrics portray. very very emotional, and of course some people can say they hate it compared to the original, because this has more guitar and whatnot, but it's the right guitar, you know? edge really knows what sort of sounds to pull from his guitar, and this cover of this song really shows it.

the original, however, is crap. heh heh :P

Two thumbs up!

Agree wholeheartedly... My name is Melody, and I'd like to make a DVD of covers of this song - and this will be the first track on it.

It sounds so... needy: "I need your love..."

Just about broke the speakers on my laptop from blaring it at the loudest possible volume on this machine.

when i think of edge's talent to channel certain emotions into sound, i always think of bono telling him to 'put el salvador through his amplifier'.

I've always loved it. The Edge's guitar is especially gorgeous and Bono sings with great conviction.

I love it!! Edge knows what sound to pull from his guitar and Bono knows how to make you heartache with just the right key in his voice. The bass and drum are perfect for the song as well, I just love it.

Oh, I've always ADORED U2's version of Unchained Melody. The first time I heard it I almost fell apart, it's just so stunningly beautiful and Bono's voice just kills me on it. Bono's voice is just pure sex. Still, I crumble every time I listen to the song.

I like it better than the original, which gets me a lot of shocked looks, raised eyebrows, and disapproving remarks. I actually do like the original just fine, but the way Bono sings it really gets to me on a much deeper level.

I think Bono's version is much better than the oh so bland 'Righteous Brothers' (Original) but not as good as George Benson's version with it's orchestral swells and ebbs....
I think there are much better U2 covers, namely 'Paint it Black' and 'Night and Day'!!! Supper cool!!!

It's brilliant. It's exactly what a cover should be: taking a previously recorded song and playing it in a way that respects the original version but adds the covering artist's interpretation and sound. Bono makes it sound so much more plaintive, so much more desperate. It's such a well put together song. It's definitely not the ballad the original was, but that's fine because you don't want to rip off the original.

I wonder how many people have actually heard the original version (which wasn't by the Righteous Brothers). :)

I've always adored the Righteous Brothers' version, I grew up considering it to be one of my favourite songs. I also liked Robson & Jerome's version (which was very similar) when that came out. Then I listened to U2's version, expecting it to sound much the same again, and I was like "Whoaaa, they've done it *completely* differently!!*... at first I was just stunned by the weirdness of it compared to what I was used to, and then I was stunned by the aching beauty of it, as you described.

I couldn't pick a favourite out of the versions I've heard, I think they're all great in totally different ways. But yes, U2's cover is beyond gorgeous and I can't imagine why anyone would dislike it.

I was so used to the Righteous Brothers' version that it took me a few listens to get into the B-side, but now I really like it.
