Hello Hello!!

amerrydeath:
I'm currently hearin: U2 - Bullet the Blue Sky

I know this is something you don't often think about (and it is maybe hard to think about, haha), but...

What is your least favorite song on each album?

Mine:
Boy - The Ocean
October - Stranger in a Strange Land
War - Red Light
The Unforgettable Fire - 4th of July
The Joshua Tree - Red Hill Mining Town (this was the hardest... I can't say I don't like anything on JT)
Rattle & Hum - Van Diemen's Land
Achtung Baby - Zoo Station
Zooropa - Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car
Pop - Miami
ATYCLB - Grace

And since I have to balance that out with a more positive question... who has done your favorite U2 cover? I say Ari Hest's cover of Running to Stand Still.

Hmm.

Boy - Into The Heart? This is hard. I guess that's the one I'm the most... apathetic about.
October - With A Shout
War - Red Light
The Unforgettable Fire - Elvis Presley & America
The Joshua Tree - .... Er. Yeah, maybe Red Hill Mining Town...?
Rattle & Hum - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. I adore the album version, but the gospel voices got to be a bit much. I heard this version on the background of a baseball game once though and it didn't seem as bad...
Achtung Baby - Oh god, I have no idea. Acrobat?
Zooropa - Dirty Day
Pop - Miami
ATYCLB - Grace

And my favorite cover... I'm going to be really stupid here and say probably Automatic Baby doing One. I know it's not exactly a cover, but I've always been in love with Michael Stipe's voice and that has to be one of my favorite songs ever.

I dont think there's anything wrong with having a least favorite, I'm sure the guys in the band have favorites and least favorites. And I LOVE Ari Hest's cover, he's coming to my Border's, but it's on a Monday so I can't go :(

+Boy-Another Time, Another Place
+October-Scarlet
+War-I love love LOVE this entire album, but as I have to pick one it'll be Red Light
+ Unforgetable Fire- This is home to most of my least fvorite U2 song, but strangely my favorite too. But I'd say Elvis Presley & America
+Joshua Tree-Mother's of the Disappeared
+Rattle & Hum-I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, it was interesting to listen to, but not good enough to put on an album
+Achtung Baby-tough choice again but I think I am going to have to go with Tryin to Throw Your Arms Around The World
+Pop-I LOVE this album..But Miami never did it for me as much as the others.

Really? ISHFWILF just screams out to be performed as a gospel song, and I'm not exactly the religious type (I infrequently go to church outside of Christian holidays).

I'm in complete agreement with you there. Whenever I hear ISHFWILF or even think of it, I imagine church and get this feeling of what church is meant to be.

You can still support the band and have least favorite songs. *shrug*

Heh... I like all of U2's songs but sometimes it's an interesting challenge to force myself to pick least favourites.

Hmm ...

Boy - I guess The Ocean, but that's a really hard call because I like a lot of this album equally.
October - Another hard one to choose. Stranger In A Strange Land, I guess.
War - RED LIGHT, WORST U2 SONG EVER.
The Unforgettable Fire - This album is perfect, thus none.
The Joshua Tree - Trip Through Your Wires.
Rattle And Hum - Love Rescue Me (or if it doesn't have to be a proper song, that Freedom For My People interlude).
Achtung Baby - Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World or Ultra Violet (Light My Way). Both are really poor efforts.
Zooropa - Babyface.
Pop - Miami, with The Playboy Mansion and If You Wear That Velvet Dress very close behind.
All That You Can't Leave Behind - I'd say In A Little While, but it's redeemed by the "a man takes a rocketship" verse, so instead, Wild Honey.

Wow!  I think that's the first time I've ever seen anyone dislike Ultra Violet.

Yeah, I tend to be called insane, but I simply find the song boring. The start has so much promise, but then it loses itself in "baby, baby, baby, light my way," which sounds more like a bad boyband song to me.

... that said, I once liked the song. Maybe I'm just going through a mood with it that's lasted over four months!

Grace?!

Wow... that's interesting. While I don't agree with some of your choices, Grace is definately the most startling.

To be honest, I'd have to say "Stuck in a Moment" is my least favorite from ATYCLB.

I'm surprised so many people dislike Grace. OK, some of the lyrics are a bit dodgy, but it's such a beautiful and soothing piece of music... it's one of the only ATYCLB tracks I adored straight away.

The hatred for Grace absolutely shocks me. It is a soothingly beautiful and calming song ... it can quite easily slip past you, but when it hits you, it's so refreshing. It deserves a higher status than the one it's got.

I don't really like any U2 covers. I guess I'm just too used to the Band themselves playing the songs that anyone else just seems... horribly inadequate.

Least Favorite Songs:
Boy - "The Ocean"
October - "Scarlet"
War - "Drowning Man"
The Unforgettable Fire - "Elvis Presley and America"
The Joshua Tree - "Trip Through Your Wires"
Rattle and Hum - I love BB King, I love U2, but I just do not like "When Love Comes to Town." Sorry guys.
Achtung Baby - None. This album is perfect.
Zooropa - "Babyface"
POP - "Playboy Mansion"
ATYCLB - "When I Look at the World"

Hmm... interesting topic... I'll dive off the limb with my first reply to the community, so please forgive any heresy :)

Boy - "Stories For Boys". Just sounds... primitive, even for a debut album.
October - "Tomorrow". Begins really heartfelt, but then turns too sunday morning preachy for my tastes. I know that's where the boys (well, at least three of 'em) were at the time, but it doesn't work for me.
War - Golly, basically the entire second half, except for "40". It's hard for me to reconcile the astounding brilliance of the first five songs with the mediocrity of the next four.
The Unforgettable Fire - "Indian Summer Sky". The only track on the album that doesn't match the amazing progression and maturity made on the rest of the album. This is by far my favorite 80s U2 album.
The Joshua Tree - Kinda suffers from the same problem I have with War, only not as severely. "Trip Through Your Wires" is the weakest link here.
Rattle and Hum - I'll agree with the poster who said "ISHFWILF". The gospel thing is, well, awful.
Achtung Baby - Quite simply my favorite album by any band ever. Every single track is monumental, with the exception of "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses", which is the only track they did in the whole decade that sounded like a step backward to the 80s.
Zooropa - There isn't a bad track on here, but pressed to name a least-favorite, I'll go with "Some Days Are Better Than Others".
Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1 - Nobody seems to have mentioned this album, so is there some technicality taboo that I'm breaking? So be it. It's an absolutely amazing album. I'll go with "Theme From Let's Go Native" as my least-favorite, just because it means the album is over.
Pop - Another astounding album (can you tell I much prefer 90s U2 to 80s U2?). Only "Last Night On Earth" gets the skip button from time to time.
Million Dollar Hotel Soundtrack - another technicality, and I almost excluded it because of the relative dearth of U2 content, but dammit, someone needs to be held accountable for letting Milla Jovovich sing! Her squawking rendition of "Satellite Of Love" will make Lou Reed spin in his grave for a thousand years once he crosses over.
All That You Can't Leave Behind - "Stuck In A Moment..." Pure Backstreet Boys-esque insipidity. Is insipidity a word? It is now. [edit: LJ's spell-checker says it is a word] Okay, that's harsh... the live versions of this song aren't half bad.
Special mention to "Electrical Storm". Am I the only one who feels they phoned this one in?

As for part two, I can honestly say that I can't recall ever hearing a band cover a U2 song. I found a list at u2wanderer.org thinking I *must* have heard at least one, and I hadn't heard any of the ones they listed... wait! I have heard that chunk of "WTSHNN" thrown in by the Pet Shop Boys. That was pretty awful.

Argh! As soon as I hit submit, I remembered a U2 cover that I absolutely adore! The Tea Party, another one of my all-time favorite bands, did an amazing version of "One" in concert. I used to have an mp3 of it on a zip disc, but it got click of death. And, derr, how could I forget Johnny Cash's cover of that song! That's good too. Not as good as Tea Party's take, but still very good. Okay, signing off now before I stick any more feet in my mouth...

My least favourite Passengers track is actually Miss Sarajevo. I just can't see why it's so popular, it does nothing for me.

Least favourite from M$H would have to be one of the instrumental tracks, but I can't remember exactly what they're all like off the top of my head. I love all the actual songs on that CD.

I choose these tracks rather by music criteria than by poetry. (If you're from the former USSR you should understand me.)

Boy — "A Day Without Me".

October — "With a Shout".

War — "Red Light".

The Unforgettable Fire — * "Elvis Presley and America". (I feel the "4th of July" as a part of "Bad" :-)

The Joshua Tree — * "Trip Through Your Wires".

Rattle and Hum — "Freedom for My People" :-) and "Love Rescue Me" if choosing from U2 own tracks.

Achtung Baby — "Love is Blindness" (Don't like an arrangement). Probably, "AB" never left the CD changer since I've inserted it there :-)

Zooropa — Can't choose between the "Some Days are Better Than Others" or "Dirty Day". I like the sound of this album most of all.

Pop — "Playboy Mansion".

All That You Can't Leave Behind — * "Grace".

* — These choices were hard because each album haven't poor songs.

Wow, someone else who thinks that as well! I feel that Promenade/4th of July/Bad is all one song. Really, the whole UF album could be one song. The flow is perfect.

(Yes, it's my favourite album ...)

who has done your favorite U2 cover?

Without a doubt it's Front Line Assembly w/ Tiffany doing "New Year's Day". Strange pairing there, I know. But the industrialness of FLA juxtaposed with Tiffany's eerie voice really make it an awesome version.

I hate most other U2 covers. I'd much rather listen to remixes.

Boy - The Electric Co
October - Scarlet
War - probably Red Light
The Unforgettable Fire - 4th Of July
The Joshua Tree - hard to pick anything!  I guess Mothers Of The Disappeared if I had to choose one. The album version of BTBS isn't as good as live versions, either.
Rattle & Hum - I'd be cheating if I said Freedom For My People or The Star-Spangled Banner, wouldn't I!  I suppose When Love Comes To Town isn't one of my absolute favourite songs.
Achtung Baby - yeesh... if I can pick anything at all, I suppose Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World. But this album is flawless.
Zooropa - Some Days Are Better Than Others
Pop - probably Gone, though I considered saying The Playboy Mansion or Miami
ATYCLB - Walk On, I think.

I appreciate such exercises. You know someone's secure with their band when they can glance at the lower end of the spectrum and not flinch.

Boy - A Day Without Me
October - With a Shout
War - The Refugee
The Unforgettable Fire - Elvis Presley and America
The Joshua Tree - Tripped Through Your Wires
Rattle and Hum - Hawkmoon 269
Achtung Baby - So Cruel
Zooropa - Some Days Are Better Than Others
Pop - Miami
All That You Can't Leave Behind - New York

Favorite U2 cover? Either Utada Hikaru's With or Without You or Johnny Cash's One.
