The Brighton Rock Star @ 11:51 pm

canadanne:
I can't believe there's been so little mention on here of Bono's speech at the Labour Party Conference today... I thought you'd all be raving about it!  I can only guess that not many people saw it. It really was good, and all the interviewees and news programmes have been unanimous in their glowing praise - it's even been described as the best and most moving speech of the entire conference. A lot of the material was recycled from previous speeches Bono has done, but I was still very impressed, and evidently I was not the only one. :)  I'm so proud of this guy it makes my heart feel like it's going to burst. He was also extremely entertaining up there today - but of course that's nothing new!

I just wish the BBC hadn't cut off the last minute or so of his speech... grrrr!  Anyone know if there's a complete video anywhere online?

Isn't there a BBC station over there?  Maybe they'd be showing it?

Seems weird that we got loads of coverage of the Democrat / Republican convention thingies, but there's no American interest in *our* politics!

There's hardly American interest in American politics, love. Most people don't pay attention over here. I live in nyc and was just, well, annoyed by the RNC, politics are a jaded game here. :-(

What kinds of things did lovely B say?

Well, this is the basic script, although he changed a few bits here and there when he actually delivered it (e.g. "horseshit" became "bollocks", hehe). I'm not sure all the jokes come across properly on paper, either... the Lennon & McCartney line was priceless, you should have seen Blair and Brown's faces! ;)

Oh, also, the video of the BBC's news report on the speech is available here (top right-hand corner).

How I wish someone in America (namely the Democratic candidate for President) could speak with that much courage, that much conviction, that much passion. We're in for dark days if the status quo is maintained in November. Maybe my family and I will move to Ireland...
