"7" @ 07:03 pm

hapavox:
As you may have read and noticed on @U2.com, TARGET stores in the U.S. will be selling an exclusive cd called "7". It will be sold only at TARGET stores starting *JAN.22nd* for $6.99(USD). No adverts on television will be shown promoting this 'exclusive' cd. Here's are the "7" tracks that are to appear on the cd..
1.Summer Rain
2.Always
3.Big Girls Are Best
4.Beautiful Day(Remix)
5.Elevation(Remix)
6.Walk On(Single Mix)
7.Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of(acoustic version)

Alright, I'm sure The EDGE had something to do with the naming of this cd. His infatuation with numbers and the whole business of 'numerology' is really catching on! Still, I'm not so sure why they made a deal with TARGET though. I'm assuming BEST BUY already had their fun. The remixed versions of the 2 tracks on this cd have not been made available as to which particular remix it is. Again, this will cd be out starting *JANUARY 22nd* at TARGET stores.

Coming soon: "HOW TO MAKE A ROCK BAND EVEN RICHER!" VHS/DVD starring Paul McGuiness and Principle Managment available exclusively at *WAL-MART* Stores in the U.S. only. Haha. I'm just kidding!:)

Ahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaugh! Of course they would do this after I've already got just about all of those songs from expensive import singles! ARGH!

Yeah, and why the exclusive deal with Target? Or Best Buy? I love this band with all of my heart but sometimes they can get just a wee bit too commercial for me. Then I go and get into Pearl Jam for a few years. =D

Yeah exactly righ! Most of these tracks did appear on import singles that I also spent my 'hard-earned' on.

I'm not so sure why they are making these deals with these chain stores in the U.S. Again, I would blame PAUL McGUINNESS and PRINCIPLE MANAGEMENT for all this. These people go out and get the 'deals' for U2. I'm sure the band doesn't hunt down these places at all looking to strike contracts and agreements. THE BAND DOESN'T SHOP AT EITHER BEST BUY OR TARGET! Again, the 'corporate monster' is lurking a lot these days...and the band are just having FUN with everything they can get from it..

Well, yeah, it's McGuinness and Principle that makes these deals but I can't believe that U2 have no say in the matter or are completely clueless about what's being done around the world in their name. If they ARE clueless....hoo boy, that's not good. But knowing the way they are when it comes to their art, I find it hard to believe they wouldn't have a similar set of standards for marketing, or how their name, image, and music is used. It would really disturb me if the band had no idea that stuff like this was going on.

I'd just like the know what the reasoning is behind stuff like this. Simply to get more money? I think they're pretty well set for life. To get these songs in the hands of the fans who don't buy the import singles? Fair enough, but then why only Target? It also bugs me to hear their songs used in advertising for the NFL. It may be effective, sonically, but some of these songs mean a lot to me and it just seems to cheapen them to hear them on TV or being used as background filler.

I dunno, for the most part I just ignore and shrug off stuff like this. It's their band, their decisions. No one is perfect and this is just a case of me having a different set of beliefs. And in the long run, what they have given me has been priceless, so I'm quite willing to cut them some slack. =)

They really wanted to invade the U.S. this time around(since release of 'ATYCLB'). U2 have said that they wanted to saturate the Amerikan market and flood it with as much publicity and products as possible this time around. I also think that INTERSCOPE/UNIVERSAL RECORDS had a lot to do with this new marketing campaign of theirs. ISLAND RECORDS still holds camp in Europe and the rest of the world but interscope/universal controls all distribution and marketing of all their products and goods in the U.S. It's a whole new way of doing things I suppose. Instead of hiding from the media and ignoring the big endorsements, they are just exposing themselves as much as possible and the cake too!

And YES, they do deserve ALL the recognition that they can get. I just hope people don't get sick of 'em...if they haven't already. But, I realize the 'real' loyal fans like us will always stick around and deal with all the window-dressing..

I think that's my worry, too, oversaturation. I fear a backlash like what came after Rattle and Hum.

That was actually around the time when I first got into them, just after that peak of The Joshua Tree. So my first few years of being a U2 fan were almost spent "in the closet" because I was 12, 13 years old and all my friends liked New Kids on the Block and Nelson and Milli Vanilli. They would tease me for liking U2, an "old" and uncool band. I wouldn't dare dream to wear a U2 shirt to school because I thought it would get me ostracized for life! hahahaa... 1992 was one of the greatest years because FINALLY it was cool to like U2 again, and I was the envy of my classmates for being able to go see them on tour.

But ANYWAY, I just don't want to see the world get sick of U2 again. I think they learned a lot with the R&H experience and will probably know when to say "enough" this time around, but the mommy in me worries anyway. ;)

On the other hand, what they have done in the last year and half or so has been brilliant, because they are all over the place and the public still loves them. Do I dare say that the events of 9/11 perhaps gave them a bit of an extension on their run? Hard to say, and we'll never know otherwise.

I want to write more but it's time for sleep and I've certainly rambled enough for one evening! =)
