Thanks. Glad you like the pics. I post. Anyway, these pictures are scattered everywhere...books, magazines(propaganda), old newspaper articles. Most of them I have to scan myself. I realize it's a total violation of copyright material but it's all in good fun and a fair tribute to the band we love..

I've always loved that picture. Ali looks so young and innocent and Bono looks like he is mad and ready to take on the world to protect that innocence.

Very nice picture indeed!:) It looks like it was taken in the early hours of the morning in Ethiopia where both husband and wife spent time and volunteered for UNICEF during the great famine in that region in 1986. I believe it was here also during this trip that Bono ended up taking a collection of photographs of the landscape and people of Ethiopia which would later turn out to be, "The String of Pearls" photograph collection that would later be auctioned off at Sotheby's in London for charitable fundraising.

In effect, Bono and Ali's trip was about protecting the world and capturing the innocence of the native inhabitants of a country that almost starved itself to mass extinction in the early and mid '80s.

Re:

Didn't Bono also write 'Where the Streets Have No Name' while they were there? If I recall, they volunteered for about 3 months. Also, I think during Zoo TV when they showed that video of 'someone' during Streets and he says 'hey you!' he is speaking to himself in a video that was filmed there. Or have I somehow made this all up?

Re:

Ah yes! You're right. 'Where The Streets Have No Name' was actually inspired by the landscape and desert of Ethiopia. Bono said the land literally had 'streets with no name'.

However, the ZooTv footage where he waves at himself during this exact song was from a desert in the Southwest U.S. where most of the photos from 'The Joshua Tree' album/era were taken as well. Actually, it could have been at Joshua Tree Nat'l Park itself where that was footage was filmed..

Ah OK. You know, I actually went throught the Joshua Tree National Park on the way to Las Vegas back in November. Those trees are the most interesting things I have ever seen. I even made hubby stop so I could look at one up close. Very strange things. Either on the way there, or on the way back (I forget), we played New Years Night in Dublin which is a favorite boot of mine from that time. I don't remember seeing Joshua Trees in the background of the ZooTV video, but then I've only watched it about four times so far.

I love all this information you have! I just love learning all about this band I love.

Re:

There was a wild rumour floating around about a couple years ago saying that the actual 'Joshua Tree' which appeared on the album had been cut down. The band or Anton Corbijn, who took the pic. of the actual tree at JT National Park, refused to disclose the specific location of the tree in fear of fans taking it down and showing up with it at the gig(s). In the last 3 years, @U2.com had developed clues and leads as to where the tree is/was. Now, the tree is supposedly gone from where it once stood in all it's glory..

Again, the footage of Bono during 'Streets' could be taken at another Southwestern desert location. It was possibly not specifically @ JT Nat'l Park. It's also noted that photographs of the band during the JT era were taken in Nevada as well..

Yes the JT has gone, :( I've never felt soo emotional about a tree in all my life!! lol
It was thought to have been chopped down but it was proved that this was not the case and that it had been "blown by the wind" to quote Bono!! sorry that was bad
It was natural cause :( atu2 show pics of the dead tree, it looked horrible.

The Desert film that is used on ZOOTV streets is Zabriske Point in Nevada.
Where the band did the promo shoot as you know.

The tree is gone. I can now rest.

Ahhh...Zabriske Point, Nevada! Thanks for that clarification.

Too lazy to go check atu2 right now, but here are some photographs of the tree both before and after the fall:

http://www.henrywagner.org/pictures/California/Desert/JoshuaTree/default.htm

The tree on top of One Tree Hill is also gone. =( It had been vandalized, began to weaken and was leaning severely and had to be cut down. Interestingly enough, it came down around about the time that The joshua tree is believed to have fallen (Sept/Oct 2000 I think).

I think they're hanging out together in Tree Heaven now. ;)

Now, let's see if I can find one of my favorite pictures of Bono and Ali...!

Shadows and Tall Trees..

(Link)

Yeah, it's a sad thing. THANKS for posting the direct links. It's amazing how the tree stood by itself. As you may know, the band and Anton chose that particular tree because it was the only one that didn't have any others growing around it as well. It was so special..

One Tree Hill? Another symbolic tree that's gone to rest..

Hrm. Well, it's not the best scan, but I got this from an Ali Hewson fan website and tried to spruce it up a wee bit:

Taken by Anton Corbijn, whom I can never get enough of!

Cool. That one's very nice!:) Bono's barely cracking a smile. However, I always thought that the JT period/era was the time when the band would never smile in their promo photographs. Most of the photos that Anton took had this serious tone..

This one's an exception during that period though..

Well, I bet being with your beloved gives you a very different mood than being out in the cold desert with your three mates and a guy who keeps asking you to move ever-so-slightly this way or that. ;-)

A lot of the pictures from the Joshua Tree tourbook were taken in a ghost town in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range of California. It's at an elevation of about 8,000 feet, totally inaccessible in the winter because the snow is up to the rooftops, and it's a true ghost town; no touristy shops, not even a bathroom or porta-potty. Evidently there are two roads in, but if they took the one I did, it was a very sloooow, bumpy ride over about 3 miles of gravelly, washboard "road." I'll have to post some of those pictures after work this evening.

I can never get enough of seeing pictures of Ali and Bono. They just look so darned happy together! I think a large part of the reason I am such a Bonoholic is because of his love and devotion to his family. It is just so sexy!

Re: my favorite Bono & Ali pic...

He practically lives the family-life as much as being the rock n' roll 'GOD'. During the last couple of years..the European media have tried to tarnish that 'devoted husband/father' image by digging up some dirt on him. Some British tabloid once claimed that Bono was 'shagging'(pardon my British!) Andrea Corr of The Corrs on the side. Hey, they just hung/hang out! NO big deal to Ali and Bono of course. The media tried to take him down though..

He's definitely a model-citizen. Voted 'European of the Year' for 2001 too..

That's a GREAT one. I swear she keeps getting better with age, too.

They are just so damn cute. =)

And I agree with Lynne, a large part of Bono's appeal to me is the fact that he's happily devoted to his high school sweetheart and a very proud daddy, too. Come to think of it, he is a very proud husband, as well.

And I have yet to read one negative thing about her, either. All that I have read has been glowingly positive, and I often think I'd rather meet Ali instead of Bono so I could say, "props to you!"

Re: my favorite Bono & Ali pic...

Ali is cool. I've always wanted to check out that documentary film she did for the Chernobyl Children's Project but I could never get a hold of it in my library. I'll have to keep looking around I suppose. She is stunningly BEAUTIFUL. Honestly, I would prefer her with the shorter locks (a la 'Sweetest Thing' video) but that's just me:).

Actually, you'd be really surprised at how VERY NICE and POLITE Bono is in person. I met Bono and The Edge for the first time outside of their hotel last October here in Chicago...and they were the NICEST, MULTIMILLIONAIRES you'll probably ever run into in your whole life. Just so very down to earth and NORMAL. You wouldn't think they were mega rock n'roll stars by the way they approach you and act..

Re: my favorite Bono & Ali pic...

Yup, those eyes, cheekbones, smile....they're all stunning. When I see pictures of the two of them together I virutally ignore Bono and can't keep my eyes off his wife! :)

And I'm not saying I wouldn't loooove to meet the actual guys in the band, of course. I think I'd probably get more tongue-tied around them and it would be more likely that I'd meet them in a setting where a lot of fans were present and I wouldn't really get to say what I wanted to say, ya know? But then there'd never be enough to time to say all I wanted to say. Ah, but I'd love to have the chance to get out at least a little bit of it!
