Rolling Stone put up their review of HTDAAB up... they gave it... FOUR STARS. (Not too surprising really, that's U2's fourth straight 4 star review). But anyhoo... here's the link.

Rolling Stone Review

EDIT: Allmusic.com has also posted their review of the album (also 4 stars)...

Yeah, that sounds about right. It's a good record but it's not a 5-star disc, IMO. I don't think we could expect something that would top "The Joshua Tree" or "Achtung Baby" at this point in their career, the best we could expect is a solid U2 album, and that's what we have.

Rolling Stone is still a joke, but I have to go with them on this one. :)

I hate how they keep dissing Pop and Zooropa.

Yah, Allmusic.com's review focused too much on how the 90's were supposedly disastrous for U2. I'm so sick of hearing that.

Rolling Stone cracks me up. U2 could release an album of farts and they'd give it at least three stars. (Not that they don't deserve it, but RS just drools over the bands they've delcared as Gods. Like The Strokes - there was a stretch where The Strokes were mentioned in every single Rolling Stone, usually somewhere in the "Random Notes" section.)

What's the lowest they've rated a U2 album, anyway? I think maybe "Pop" and "The Unforgettable Fire" got 3 stars ... but back in the 80s the reviews seemed different somehow. More cranky, maybe. I dunno. I'm bored and trying to keep myself awake.

Rolling Stone has a tendency to be kinda rough on new artists or groups, but once you prove yourselves to them, the magazine will cut you a fair amount of "slack" from that point onwards.

October and UF are the two lowest rated (3 stars each). Pop has 4, and I'm one of the few who thinks it deserves that many. :D All of the rest have 4 except for The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.

Rolling Stone does baffle me alot... like when they gave the new Beastie Boys album 5 stars... I WISH that it was that good.

Interesting! I think they were wrong about UF, but spot on with October. And I raise my Diet Coke to Rolling Stone for recognizing the greatness that was Pop.

I know that the band wasn't able to devote as much time as they would have preferred towards the finishing of the album, but when I listen to the songs from Pop, they simply do not sound finished to me, almost as if they're a sort of "skeleton" of what could have been. Sure, Pop could have been a masterpiece, but the first time I heard the album version of Pop, I was completely stunned at how little it moved me. The "four star" rating from Rolling Stone, to me, would have to be as much a rating based on the finished product as it is on the untapped potential of the album, a rating of what is and what could have been. Compared to the work of some other artists, the "four star" rating of Pop could seem justifiable in some ways, but when compared to U2's own body of work, to say that Pop deserves the same rating as Achtung Baby, something just seems amiss.

I don't think Pop is anywhere near as good as Achtung Baby, but I do think it's a very very good album. I agree that it needed to be worked on more. It doesn't sound so unfinished to me that I can't bare listening to it, however.

It's not that I can't stand to listen to it ("If God Will Send His Angels" is probably one of my favorite U2 songs), only that I wish it was more than what it is.
